Partner having mental health issues

Partner having mental health issues

1st time poster here. Having a very hard time with my partner as he's going through some mental health issues at present. No matter what I've tried to do, say, given him resources to use, he just won't accept any help. He's been stepped down from his job as a result. This ain't the 1st time this has happened. I've dealt with a heap over the past 5yrs. I'm now at a loss at what more to do and it's also affecting me in a negative way. Any help or information would be appreciated 🙏🏽🙏🏽

Hi there @Pittymumma ,

We wanted to take this opportunity to welcome you to the forums.

We hope that you find the forums a great place to connect with other members, share stories and ideas, and find the support and connection you deserve.

Feel free to Introduce yourself here if you haven’t already! We look forward to seeing you around on the forums!

It is such a difficult spot to be in, when you want to help someone and can see how the resources that you have provided can be helpful but the person in need is unable to see it or unable to do anything about it. I cannot imagine how difficult these past few years would have been for you, to see your loved one suffer and feel helpless.

I hope others in the community can share some resources for you

Hi @Pittymumma

Welcome to the forums 🙂

"You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink". It can be very frustrating though, when it's impacting on both of you and your life.

On one hand, your partner has every right to decide how and what, if any, treatment they will attempt. On the other, you have the right to your own boundaries for safety, respect, and protection of the shared resources within the partnership. Would your partner would be open to couple's counselling?

It sounds like you've been coping with a lot on your own. It can be really draining without support for yourself. You might like to have a look at some info here. around burnout and support strategies.

SANE also have a Support Line: 1800 187 263 (10AM - 8PM) which you can call if you ever feel like a chat.

Take Care!
