Something’s not right

Any other people struggling at work

Any other people struggling at work

I am in a career I had to study for years to get into. I’m supposed to love it but right now I’m struggling through the days. I messed up a few weeks ago and have made other mistakes that are from being scatterbrained and anxious which sends me deeper into the spiral.

I am so worried about things I’ve done wrong - or could have done wrong although I know it’s pointless to dwell. Anyone been through this? It will take years before I can be sure I haven’t messed up here for some things.

anyone been through career struggles? Changed out of something you worked hard for but no longer love?

Hi @Liearna and welcome to the forums

Reading your post I'm wondering whether you've found you don't love this career like you thought you would, or is it the case that it's been a bigger adjustment than you expected?

Starting a job is rough, especially one with all the pressure behind it of being a role that you studied and worked hard to land. I find that in the past when I've made mistakes at work the harder I've tried to focus on not making another mistake, the more likely it is that I do.

Is there anyone around you who you could talk to about the anxiety you're feeling and the challenges of the job, like a supervisor or peer?

To briefly share my own experience with this topic: I was really excited to land my first job in my field but I found myself pretty severely burnt out about 6 months in and seriously considering going back to working hospo despite all my years studying and my mountain of HECS debt. Luckily I had a great supervisor and coworkers who I could speak to openly and who made me realise that it was the role that wasn't a good fit for me, not the industry. I wonder whether that might resonate with you at all and whether there may be other roles where you can apply your skillset that might be a better fit for you?

It is so hard to know if a path is right for us until we are on it, and there's no shame in realising that something isn't right after giving it a good go

Thanks I have been in the role - different locations but same role for 15 years or so 😞 - it’s me that’s the problem not being new.

Hey @Liearna ,

You are certainly not alone. If you look at research, people change careers at least 3 times in their lives. And yes, that's careers - not jobs.

I've worked in 4 different careers already.

There's no shame in no longer loving what you once enjoyed. I went to school with a few close mates, and all of them studied for YEARS. After studying, they all realised it wasn't what they wanted and moved on.

The main thing is that you love what you do. If you don't, then it's time to make a change whether it's changing jobs or changing careers.
