Something’s not right

BPD and major regression when ill

BPD and major regression when ill

Hi all,

Ive been on my bpd journey for a while now and have been doing great with using coping skills. I have a regular therapist, just finished a cbt group and about to start a dbt group. Basically I have been doing well and coping.

This week I caught a really bad flu, after just recovering from one a few weeks ago.
I am on day 6 and I can’t stand feeling like this anymore. I’ve been coughing so much, extremely congested and the body aches are killing me.
Today, my husband of 6 years, who’s been amazing in helping me with my bpd, had enough of the loud coughing and made a comment in a mean tone to just shut tf up already.

That was it. I broke down. I began crying and coughing and did not stop for a whole hour and a half. He put me in a shower, made me drink water, asked what he could do, but he was so overwhelmed and angry by how loud I was being for so long that his caring felt like anger and hate.
after almost 2 hours of non stop crying I took some calming medicine and put myself to sleep.
I tried so hard using all the breathing exercises but I could not stop hyperventilating,
he was so over it and I felt so incredibly hated.
During that time, I realised how regressed I was. And my brain took me right back to being a little kid, who’s been sick for hours, and mum couldn’t handle it well.
after the medicine I fell asleep but by the time I woke up, my husband had gone out and I started crying all over again.
And I just can’t stop, the pain, the thoughts, the crying, the fear.
I know I won’t feel like this forever and soon I’ll feel like myself again but right now that feels impossible.
I am so angry at myself for regressing this much after doing so well. And im so angry at my husband for not giving me the love and care I once craved so much
Im sorry if this is confusing and like I don’t have a point.
but idk what else to do. I’m so hurt, and having this annoying flu is not helping.
I guess I just want to know if other people feel this way, if there’s any comfort in this. Because right now it feels like for the rest of my life I’ll feel this pain. And everytime I get sick I’ll switch into this crying winning toddler who just wants to feel loved.
Tips for not regression too much/staying stable when feeling ill?

Hey @KittyKr, thank you for reaching out to the Forums and sharing your experiences with the community!

It sounds like you are going through a lot with being unwell and not getting the love and care from your husband that you expected the needed. Sometimes the people closest to us don't meet our needs and that can really hurt. I hope you recover from your flu soon and you feel better.

I'm sorry to hear that your husband spoke to you like that, and nobody deserves to be told that especially when you are unwell. If you are feeling unsafe or like you need support with your relationship there are people you can speak with, and I'll just pop a support line here in case you want to chat with them: Home | 1800RESPECT.

It's ok to feel overwhelmed when you are unwell and need a bit more support. Please stay connected with your peers here on the Forums and continue to reach out when you feel like it.

Take care

RiverSeal

Re: BPD and major regression when ill

It’s completely normal to feel more vulnerable when you’re sick. Illness can bring out a lot of old feelings and make us crave comfort and love, just like when we were kids. It’s okay to feel like this; many people experience something similar.

When it comes to staying stable and not regressing too much, here are a few tips:

1. **Self-Compassion**: Allow yourself to feel what you’re feeling without judgment. It’s okay to want comfort when you’re not feeling well.

2. **Routine**: Try to maintain a simple routine, even if it’s just getting out of bed, showering, and eating something nourishing.

3. **Mindfulness**: Practice mindfulness or grounding techniques to help keep you in the present moment, rather than getting lost in past emotions.

4. **Ask for Support**: Don’t hesitate to reach out to someone you trust. Sometimes just hearing a caring voice can help.

5. **Small Comforts**: Surround yourself with small comforts, like a favorite blanket, soothing music, or a warm drink.

6. **Remind Yourself**: This is temporary. Both the illness and the feelings that come with it will pass.

Take care of yourself, and know that it’s okay to feel what you’re feeling. You’re not alone in this.

Hey @KittyKr ,

I'm hearing you. I'm sorry things have escalated and you feel you have regressed.

I have BPD, and I want to share my experiences if that's okay.

I just want to say that what you have shared is totally normal. It may not necessarily mean you have regressed. If anyone shouted at me to shut tf up while I was already feeling vulnerable (sick with the flu), I'd be crying too. This does not necessarily mean you have regressed. Remember, humans have feelings, even if we don't have BPD.

What I found is that when someone is unwell, they are more vulnerable to environmental triggers.

Remember, you have been doing so well with your therapist. Try considering how far you have come!

Allow yourself to heal know that you are not 'wrong'.

My heart goes out to you.

Hugs, tyme
