Something’s not right

Sorry for posting again. Confused and lost.

Sorry for posting again. Confused and lost.

Please excuse me if this post is a bit scattered. I'm quite upset and not sure what to do with myself.

About 8 years or so ago, after bouncing around between psychologists, I was referred to a psychiatrist who diagnosed me with Bipolar 2. I continued seeing her for about 5 years, even when she moved practices, but then she retired. My GP referred me to a new psychiatrist (thus was about the years ago now). He seemed alright. Our first couple of sessions were remote because it was during the COVID pandemic. I have now seen him about four times in person.

Earlier this year he referred me to hospital for TMS. That went fine, but he said I would need maintenance and, as it happens, I recently had a really bad depressive episode so I am back in hospital now.

Today I saw one of the hospital psychiatrists and he told me that my normal psychiatrist noted that I had major depression and that I said I had Bipolar 2, but he had seen no evidence of that. I tried to describe a recent hypomanic episode to the hospital psychiatrist, which I think I had told me regular psychologist, but now I don't know what's going on.

If I'm not Bipolar, if it's not hypomania, then what does it mean when I feel like God is talking to me... Even though I don't believe in God?

I feel awful and confused and embarrassed and ashamed. Has anyone else had things like this happen? What did you do?

Hey @Spookums, wow yeah sounds like a rollercoaster. And please don't feel like you need to apologise for making a new post - I'd much rather you do so than hold it all in and try to muddle through it by yourself.

I can't really make any judgement call on what diagnosis would be most suitable, but I can tell you that in my experience, diagnosis is merely meant to guide treatment, not to be a perfectly fitting label that everyone's experiences are going to completely align with. It sounds like you're looking for some clarity and assuredness though, which is very fair! Have you shared with this hospital psych about your experiences of feeling God is talking to you? I can imagine it to be a pretty scary experience, and one that can come with its own lil pile of shame. But you deserve care and support to help you navigate these experiences!

@Spookums hi, try to stay positive. Know it's hard. I agree with @@Jynx, that perhaps it's a good idea to mention to the hospital psych about the God experiences. I have been diagnosed with bipolar also, and it's a hard journey, but focus on loving yourself. Perhaps you could request to see the hospital psychologist for some more lengthened sessions to give you a space to explore your feelings? I know times with psychiatrists can be quite short and it can be hard to use that time to vent or explore and feel supported. I also find mindfulness practice essential, even if it's reading an inspirational book. Do you like music? That helps me a lot too. I just plug headphones into my phone and go into a space that is uplifting and encouraging etc. I think music can help a lot. I hope your day is good today.
