New realisation

New realisation

It hit me yesterday how much an old friend used and abused me...

TW: SA

Content/trigger warning

even before he sexually abused me.

Im sad, angry, hurt, disappointed. I feel broken. I'm scared to turn to my current friends because I feel so defective and like they would just do the same things he did. But I long for connection and support from people outside my professional team. I'm seeing a lot of them today like I do most Saturdays. I just feel scared.

To put this in context. I had one "friend", my only friend during my 20s, he used me a lot, financial and emotional abuse and manipulation were common threads of the friendship/relationship. He owes me over 10,000 that I'll never get back. It took til he sexually abused me on my birthday to finally get the courage to stay away and block him and never have further contact. I'll never get what he took back. I dony care about the money but all the damage he left behind and what he stole of myself that won't come back. I have major trust issues. I feel broken and defective. Like it was my fault he did that stuff.

Content/trigger warning

It only hit me yesterday after I saw something about financial abuse on Facebook yesterday. All the shit he did came flooding back. All the stuff I blocked out. His control and manipulation. How I never could see anyone else. Stuff he did to me when we lived together. How he bribed me to take him back after moving interstate.

I hate myself. I hate the person he made me into. I hate how I still feel his claws in my mind. I can't escape. He is my demon. I want to cut it all out.

Re: New realisation

@The-red-centaur it is a horrible and despicable action to manipulate, groom or coerce any person.

It is outright ABUSE.

None of it is your fault @The-red-centaur

That person’s actions are their responsibility, not yours.

You have every right to feel very sad and furious.

The fact that you can see this person treatment of you as abuse, is evidence that you have made progress in your MH journey.

I’m proud of you.

BIG hugs G

Re: New realisation

Hello @The-red-centaur,

Thank you very much for sharing, and I am so sorry to read about what has happened to you.

As mentioned by @Glisten, that persons' actions have been absolutely despicable and not only is none of this your fault, but you have every right to feel upset and angry.

I believe you made the right decision in putting yourself first and cutting them out of your life. You should feel proud of yourself for taking that step and for reaching out here on the Forum, that takes courage.

That's good that you're seeing people today, but I'm sorry that you feel scared.

If you feel you need to speak to someone outside your support circle, I highly recommend 1800 RESPECT (https://www.1800respect.org.au/) who are available 24/7.

I hope that you can find the support that you are looking for and hope to hear from you soon.

Try to be kind to yourself and take care.

Re: New realisation

Morning @The-red-centaur

So very proud of you for having the strength to carry on and get rid of this person from your life. You have every right to be feel angry and used, but can I say he is but one person, grant it a despicable one, and that you shouldn't wall yourself off from the companionship and mateship that true friends offer. Yes, you have to be wary and look out for yourself, but you are a strong person and you deserve to be happy, so enjoy your friends and what they have to offer................Asgard

Re: New realisation

Thanks everyone.

I had a bad weekend. I couldn't deal with it and hurt myself pretty bad Saturday. It could have been worse I guess.

I am trying ti focus on other things. I don't have to he define by my traumas anymore. Sigh it just hard.

Re: New realisation

Not a problem at all, @The-red-centaur,

I'm sorry to see that you had a rough weekend, how are you going today?

I think it's a good strategy to try to shift your focus when you're not feeling the best or are overthinking certain things. Whilst being mindful to not avoid or bury any of the trauma, but to not fixate on it and to face it when we are in the right headspace and can safely do so. And yes that's such a beautiful way to put it, we are all so much more than the trauma we carry.

I hope that today is better for you… and remember, when you feel that you're not safe and are thinking about thoughts of self harm or suicide, Lifeline (https://www.lifeline.org.au/) is available 24/7 via phone, online chat and text. And if it is an emergency contact 000.

Be kind to yourself and take care 🧡

Re: New realisation

@defaultusername thanks.

I am doing ok I guess. I admitted myself to the psych ward for the weekend. I have other stuff going I can't really express or talk about.

I'm trying to stay positive. I start tafe on monday. I feel overwhelmed by the past, but I want to shift my focus to my future.

Re: New realisation

That's really good that you sought help and were in a safe space, that shows a lot of strength @The-red-centaur.

I think that's a great way to look at things, as overwhelming as our pasts can be — looking forward can be a wonderful way to shift our thinking and create healthier habits, as well as helping us to foster a sense of hope… Which is a beautiful thing.

Studying and volunteering really helps me remain positive and excited about the future.

Wishing you all the best with TAFE next week!
