Failed a uni subject

Failed a uni subject

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone can relate to this but I failed a subject last semester at university and it's made me feel really down. All my friends passed this subject and I just feel so behind. I didn't tell my parents that I failed because I didn't want them to be disappointed in me/be worried about me. Luckily, though, I've been allowed a resit of the exam in July, which I'm grateful for, but it still sucks that I need to study for this exam again since I found this subject really difficult to study for. Anyway, I know you shouldn't base your self-worth off your academic achievements, but this failure has really got me down.

Sorry for all the long, rambling sentences, I just needed to get this off my chest.

Re: Failed a uni subject

That's not a failure @HopeDream . You'd have failed if there was no opportunity to pass. Study it again, perhaps a slightly different tangent, with a mix of old and new material. All you have to do is the work, exams are easy and fun.

Re: Failed a uni subject

I'm so sorry this has happened @HopeDream and I can hear how disappointed you are but I'm glad you have the opportunity to do it again this month. Chin up and talk to your tutors 'cos I'm sure you'll nail it next time. Cheering you on.

Re: Failed a uni subject

Hey @HopeDream ,

You're not alone. I sort of 'failed' a unit, but purely because I didn't do any work. The bad part was it was part of a scholarship which meant I had to pay for what I 'failed'.

I hear how much it hurts to have 'failed' (seems like a harsh word), but I'm glad there is a resit. Does that mean if you pass the resit, then you pass the unit? Or do you still have to redo it?

For mine, the 'fail' stays on my transcript unfortunately. My uni transcripts tell a story in terms of my mental health. When things were going 'well', I got all D's and HD's. When my MH was poor, I barely scraped through.

Please know you are not alone in this.

Hugs

Hi @Eve7 @Stout - Great to see you both here.

Re: Failed a uni subject

Morning @HopeDream

Been through uni (a long time ago) so I know what you are going as regarding hoping to god that you have passed those hard subjects. Ok, you didn't pass that 1 subject, whats done is done, you still have the opportunity to resit it in July. So study hard, you know you can do it, I know it sucks, but get those notes out, review your work, the previous exam is probably a guide on what they will ask ( it was in my day). Have faith in yourself, we are all cheering for you here........Asgard

Re: Failed a uni subject

Hi @HopeDream

I'm sorry to hear that you did not pass your subject at Uni and its really understandable that you are feeling down about it. It sounds like a great opportunity that you have been given though to resit the exam.

It sounds like a tricky subject... are you able to reach out to your tutors/lecturers for assistance with studying for the resit? I know it can be a bit daunting reaching out directly to your teachers, but in the past when i have done so they have really come through for me and pointed me in the right direction. Also, it might be worth reaching out to Student Support services as they may have some people you can talk to about study skills etc that may help you in studying for the exam.

Something that helped me when I was at uni was giving myself little "rewards" for reaching certain study goals... for example I would read and take notes for a set amount of time, and then after that time would reward myself with doing something I enjoyed like watching one episode of a TV show I liked. When that was done I would repeat the process a few times. This might be helpful for you if you can knuckle down into the books for a bit and then do something that you like to do that will help life your mood.

You've got this!💙

Warm regards

Re: Failed a uni subject

Hi, @HopeDream Sorry to hear you are going through this, a family member of mine has also failed their subject at uni, and they were disappointed and sad, this led to motivation issues.

I can relate to how you feel, I felt the same when I used to fail my subjects. Sometimes different subjects might not interest you more than others, but that's fine, the important thing is to stay consistent and motivated in your studies, remind yourself why you are studying at uni, and visualise where you want to be when you graduate.

Stay on track and say to yourself "Let's go! I got this! Don't be afraid to ask for assistance from your uni, they are there to help you in your studies, you could also ask for tutoring from your uni.

Take note of the areas you need to improve and work on them. Don't be too hard on yourself, believe me, lots of students fail their subjects, if you don't fail, you will never learn. Believe in yourself that you can do it! Best of luck in your studies, take care.

Re: Failed a uni subject

Hi @Hope2Recovery

Thank you so much for your reassuring words, it means a lot to me. I am in the process of studying for the subject and I am going over things that I missed in my initial study, and although it's hard, I'm hoping that I can hopefully pass the exam and proceed to the next semester. I guess I've just been doubting myself a lot recently and been struggling with low self-esteem/confidence, so this failure has been weighing on me more than usual. I will update with how I go on the exam later on.

Thanks again.
