My mum and I

My mum and I

I was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder 2 years ago now. When me and my mum were in session with my psychologist - my mum said "but why now?" mum wasn't sure why I was diagnosed with autism in my early 30s.

I replied to mum that I was born with autism, and she said that I wasn't. It baffles me as to how mum believes that. When mum said to me what made me think I was autistic, I said that when I prayed to God and Mother Mary, I understood that it was time to go and get a diagnosis. Today, I am proud to identify as a person on the autism spectrum and when I come to the forums here, because I feel as though other forum members will accommodate my neurodiversity.

I do look forward to seeing my mum and my psychologist next week though. For the rest of the day, I will be in my office and doing more work on my memoir. The working title for my memoir is How Things Work: Authentically Autistic.

Hey @PositivePossum6

That's very exciting that you are working on your memoir! Good on you. It sounds tricky that your Mum hasn't understood your diagnosis fully, but it's great that you have your diagnosis and are able to move forward.

Hello @Ainjoule

My memoir is coming along very well so far. I am, however, only working on the first draft of it at this stage. I have a long way to go. My memoir is very important to me. I will be speaking to a lot of people who have known me throughout my life. People such as my support workers, people like my teachers from primary school and high school, my university lecturers, people I have worked with, my mum and dad of course, and my closest friends.

There will also be many pictures in my memoir. Pictures of places that continue to be special to me. My poetry will also be in my memoir, stories about my time as an undergraduate studying psychology and philosophy, documenting my graduation.

I hope to publish my memoir one day.

Wow peeps

@Ainjoule @PositivePossum6

My partner has written his memoir but oh

Asking him to see an editor for tips how to edit it is a nightmare.

He doesn't want to change any ifs or buts .....

Groan.....lol

I would love to read your memoirs .....they sound fascinating.

I'm having a break from book reading whilst I finish a quilt with dogs on them.

Hi @PositivePossum6,

I'm sorry that you've experienced issues with your mother in regard to your recent diagnosis, whereas being diagnosed has clearly had a positive impact on you, which is lovely as it sadly doesn't happen for all people.

And I'm so happy that you feel the Forum is a safe space for you and other neurodiverse people.

As @Ainjoule said previously, good on you for starting your memoir and great title — it sounds like the research process will be a lot of fun for you as well, catching up with people you've known over the years. Please keep us updated!

Looking forward to hearing from you.

P.s. Love the doggy quilt @PeppyPatti!!
