Refusing medication

Refusing medication

Wondering if anyone has any advice.

My son has been on antipsychotic medication for over and for the first time tonight he has refused to take it 🥴

He also has a psychiatric appointment tomorrow which he says he won’t go to.

He has been doing so well and I am

a bit shocked as to where this has come from.

I have heard this happens when patients feel well and then decide they don’t need the medication anymore ☹️

Re: Refusing medication

It's all too common @Ljr2005 .

Psychiatric medication can have a lot of side effects as well as the person feeling well and feeling like they don't want to take it anymore.

If you are able to speak to his treating team, they may have more ideas.

Worse comes to worse, his condition deteriorates and he is back on an order and possibly needing dept injections.

If he is aware of the potential consequences, he may think twice about stopping meds.

I hope you will be able to get through to him considering he has been doing so well lately.

Re: Refusing medication

I've come across many younger people who, as soon as they feel a little better, they stop taking their meds. @Ljr2005 It's certainly common.

Hopefully you will be able to get through to him.

I've working with 2 people now who are in a similar situation. Sometimes I question if it is because of the cost of meds? Then, I don't think it's just that. There's more to it.

We all live and learn. I hope your son takes the easier path here and learns from others' mistakes as opposed to his own.

Re: Refusing medication

He took it at 12:30 last night @tyme

Better late then never.

Let’s see if he will go his appointment today

Thanks 😊

also I don’t think it is cost, we pay for it.

I think it is more about wanting to have a sense of control.

but yes he does seem to need to learn things the hard way!

Re: Refusing medication

Hi @Ljr2005

That's good to hear that your son took his meds last night - even if it was reluctantly and late!

Have you managed to get in contact with his treating team today?

It sounds like a stressful situation to have to deal with, are you looking after yourself/practicing self-care?

Keep us posted 🙂

Warm regards

Re: Refusing medication

Hi @SkySeeker22 yes they explained what would happen if stopped abruptly and explained how they would support him to reduce if he really wants that.

It is stressful but the thought of him unmedicated again is a bit scary 😟

Thanks for your kinds words. His dad and I are making sure we look after ourselves too
