Life's tough

Life's tough

I don't really know where to put this, so I made a new post.

I'm finding myself having increased anxiety in recent months.

It is mostly to do with dealing with other people - people who misrepresent the reality of situations in which you are involved (but others fail to notice it is BS), others that imply negative things about you in group settings (whether in email or in person), those that lack integrity or respect - those sorts of things. You have to choose how to respond - either passively leave it be, or try to fix the situation with some facts and serve of reality, and/or defend yourself. Either way you lose. People don't like it when you directly point out misrepresentations or correct them, and see you as a bully. If you leave it be, people walk all over you.

This morning I was experiencing extreme anxiety due to an email that was sent overnight. I am now halfway through my work day and still very shaken by it, as well as the perception of those that read the email and my response to what was said. I am really finding it hard to calm myself.

On top of this, I have recently been told my brother has started to show signs of depression. He has been having full-blown panic attacks. When he started taking antidepressants, he got way way worse. He just saw the doctor again, who switched his medicine so hopefully that helps. But now my parents are having to support his mental health concerns as a priority which is of course very draining for them, on top of already being my main support.

I think my anxiety is also making me much more prone to become unwell and fatigued. I had to take time off work last week to rest and recover from various physical ailments and extreme exhaustion.

I'm not exactly sure what I'm seeking by writing this here. Maybe just someone to listen and show some care. Thanks for reading. 🙂

Hey @Alonely , being misrepresented and feeling anxious about it is tough. Are there any strategies that you can use to mitigate the anxiety? I know that is particularly difficult while you’re working. I just wanted to say that I hear you and I am glad you are posting here about it.

Hi @Alonely

I hear you; I feel any sort of conflict can cause anxiety, at least in my experience

It's an uncomfortable feeling when there's dissonance between our experiences and the perceptions of other people's experience

Is there something you can do to self-soothe your anxiety at work?

I imagine navigating your challenges and now learning about your brother's is hard

We're here to support you through this ❤️

Re: Life's tough

@Alonely I am so sorry that you feel you have to defend yourself and how it is effecting you physically, emotionally and mentally. It sounds like a very toxic environment to surround yourself in and it most definately takes a toll on someone more and more being in this type of environment.

Do you have a union representative that you could speak to about what is happening and how it is making you feel as legally an employer has an obligation to protect employees from all forms of harrassment, as what you are experiencing is harrassment, toxicity and emotional abuse and is not acceptable in any workplace.

I would be keeping a log of all and any encounters where this is happening, who is involved, when and where possible show proof. I would also talk to your supervisor about it and also log this as evidence and what outcome happened, ask for everything in writing as a paper trail.

If you feel like management are not taking it seriously you can speak to your supervisors, superior, which I have had to do in the past myself as I felt my own boss was to bias of my mental health condition, clearly had little understanding of it and person bias and stigma and too friendly with my work colleagues where she blurred the line between friend and manager. Favouritism was was definately shown between my fellow workers and myself in regards to work tasks, holiday leave, even the way I was repremanded for minor issues.

So I too have lived and worked a life in a toxic workspace, luckily after many years I realised what it was doing to my overall health, the lack of respect by work colleagues both via our electronic messaging service, openly in the office to others, overhearring it when they spoke with fellow work collegues, personal text messging between each other during work hours and how it finally broke me as a person. Like many people we put up with crap just to hold down a job and live because we have no choice but to pay bills. I have always lived open about my mental health condition.

The stubborn part in me was not going to let bullies push me out of my job and I stayed working in this toxic environment for many many years, looking back now I would not put myself through that again.

No job is ever worth your physical and mental health. Everyone has to get along whether they like each other or not. I have worked in some environments with not nice people on a daily basis but some places just really take the cake and can make your daily existance a living hell.

Like you I have done everything from choosing to be the bigger person and ignore it, address with the person/ people one on one directly, redirect it and address the stigma as well as correct misinformation, as well as report directly to my boss and eventually my bosses manager.

It sounds like your build up of anxiety may be leading to you developing panic attacks as a result and I have also gone through and overcame this as well in my working life. I am glad it is being noted with your GP. If u have an EAP policy they are independant counsellors you can talk to about this and can give you some directions as to others services. It is a confidential service and the employer is not advised of what you speak about.

It is up to you as an employee to show evidence of this harrassment, hence you need to document everything, date, time, what was said and done, word for word, who was involved, any potential witnesses.

I am always happy to talk as are the other peers online whenever you need. If you do speak to your manager, take a support person you trust with you to document what was spoken about and make sure you follow up anything that they agreed to do, get this in writing. Forward all these emails to yourself so you have a record, and a record for HR. A paper trail will be your best friend in dealing with these issues legally if it comes to it.

If it does get so bad you have the right to ask to be redeployed elsewhere if possible in the business.

I am signing off from my weekly shift for now but will check back in with you, when I am next online. You are not alone, and I could write a book about the stigma, discrimination, harrassment, emotional abuse that still goes on in workplaces even with all the policies and procedures in place legally and what are some of the pros and cons and the level people will stoop to to get you to resign or be pushed out, and the emotional tool, fall out and rebuilding resilence after the fact. 😼

Hi all,

Thank you for your replies.

Sorry I was not more specific with the situations in which I am having this anxiety.

I have ongoing issues with work colleagues which cause me a great deal of angst. (I have started having a day off each month to get some balance for my mental health and escape for a while.) I have had several situations arise with colleagues, which have required my superiors and HR to become involved. Fortunately the actions taken were supportive of me. Overall it is a great place to work, but there are about 20% of my immediate team of colleagues that do regularly cause a peak in my anxiety. (On top of this I have social anxiety, which is a separate matter, but it does make work life even hard in other ways)

However the issue that triggered me this morning stemmed from interactions with my neighbours in my strata building. I am on the committee and advocate for the needs of my fellow owners and tenants. This morning I woke to find an email addressed to the committee and our strata manager from the very person I have been consistently helping to try to get necessary works done on our property. The email not only lacked any appreciation for my efforts but negatively portrayed my actions and completely disregarded the incompetence and ongoing issues caused by others. My anxiety sky-rocketed in response. Perhaps a panic attack as was suggested.

I'm yet to find effective ways to calm myself after a bout of intense anxiety - the only thing that ever works is time. Having distance in time from the event or situation that triggered the anxiety.

Re: Life's tough

Hey @Alonely

I'm so sorry to hear what is happening with your work colleagues and your neighbours.

I definitely understand getting anxious around emails, especially if it's something that is upsetting.

I also feel for you with your increase in anxiety. Anxiety is never a nice thing. I'm sorry you feel you don't have many skills for intense anxiety. Does deep breathing, TIPP, or meditation ever help?

I hope your brother can get some support as well. I'm pleased to hear you have supportive parents.

Do you have any other support in your life at the moment?

I'm sorry you have to deal with bullying at work. That would be very hard. I myself have been bullied at school and at work, so I get what you're going through. Does your HR person help when situations arise?

I hope you're feeling a bit better tonight. I'm always here if you want a chat.

@Alonely How are you now? Is everything fine? How is brother doing?

Re: Life's tough

Hello @tyme @Birdofparadise8 @Tilz

Thanks for your kind words and concern.

I'm doing much better today. I had a good session of sharing my thoughts and feelings with my mum last night, which really does help to relieve some of the anxiety by just getting it out. And I've made a fresh start today with no further communications with those involved in the emails yesterday.

My parents spent the day with my brother yesterday and said he is doing much worse than on the weekend. His doctor switched his medicine so hopefully this one helps him to feel better. He will also be seeing a psychologist to discuss things. But in the meantime, my parents will again be spending time with him today. He is apparently just a shell of the person he normally is, not saying much, not sleeping, not eating much, just a stationary silent being. My parents couldn't even get him to go for a walk.

Despite his quite dramatic decline in mental health, my parents have decided to come visit me tomorrow. I am having a day off work and we are going to go for a lovely walk up the coast. I do find days of just walking and enjoying nature and having chit chat with my folks very therapeutic. I find that I am able to become quite relaxed and forget my worries for a while.

It does concern me that my brother may feel isolated and further depressed, but hopefully he will get in touch by phone if he needs connection.
