Something’s not right

I love you just the WEIGH you are.

I love you just the WEIGH you are.

I have a complex relationship with weight.

I mean not really. The thing is, I am moderately overweight. I don’t think that’s a big deal. But it’s becoming more of an obstacle than it should be.

My sister asked me, “if you’re so serious about having children, why don’t you lose weight?” I just don’t think being the way I am now is a bad thing.

I remember a quote from EB White:

We teach our child many things I don’t believe in, and almost nothing I do believe in. We teach punctuality, particularly if the enforcement of it disturbs the peace. My father taught me, by example, that the greatest defeat in life was to miss a train. Only after many years did I learn that an escaping train carries away with it nothing vital to my health...

Who cares if you miss a train? Are you a decent person, do you contribute to society? Your lack of punctuality doesn’t matter, and your weight doesn’t really matter. I mean within reason. Is it affecting other areas of your life?

What people say is, “if being moderately overweight is no big deal, then conversely, losing it should be no big deal either.”

I had this conversation with a colleague once at a party. I was talking to her about how I haven’t really been in relationships and I explained how people thought it had to do with my weight. She nodded along and then all of a sudden, something I said must have resonated. She said “you know what, I dealt with the exact same thing growing up”. She talked about how she was significantly overweight, and she thought the same thing. “People should be thinking about my personality, they should be attracted to who I am, not just focusing on my weight.”

She didn’t really provide an easy answer, but she did say that when she lost weight, things started to happen for her. And that also gave her the confidence to recognise when people were attracted for her JUST for her losing the weight, and gave her the confidence to reject them.

It sucks, it’s a sad reality… it shouldn’t matter, but it does.

But the thing is, losing weight would give you the best opportunity. The opportunity you probably deserve. Weight or no weight, why not make it a little bit easier for yourself?

I still haven’t 100% gotten my head around it, but that conversation stuck with me. I am open to paying more attention to my weight. Just because it would help to eliminate that variable.

It's a good amount of information. First impressions count and while I don't agree with being slim also means you are healthy, some people with extra weight are extremely fit.

I would proposition this to you, is your weight a reflection of your lifestyle? I.E. is it a factor because you are not out participating in activities with friends?

If you think of weight as a factor of itself, well it is harder to change, but if you think of weight as a reflection of your lifestyle, well then you start to change your lifestyle.

Hi @florencefifty ,

Wow what an insightful read for this thursday morning!

I too have been someone who has always been overweight. Weight and the concept of it in our society especially in female beauty standards is such a tricky concept. I can see where you are coming from having understood logically that weight shouldn't matter and does not reflect on who you are as a person but still having these ingrained ideologies stuck in our mind from years of messaging growing up.

As much as it sucks to say, I feel that a complex journey with weight is a lifetime struggle that gets easier the more you fight back towards your own internalised concept of female beauty standards. I also think that when talking about relationships, if they don't love you for the weight you are and that is something that matters to them then they don't deserve all the joy and love you have to offer.

I hope your journey with this is going okay, thank you for the wonderful share.

Hi @florencefifty

Can relate in a wee bit to your post. I was over weight , doctor said I needed to loose weight as it was likely that I would get a whole host of medical issues if I didn't. I was self conscious about it all and would live in the baggy clothes - but one day I bite the bullet, I went for a wee walk and the funny thing is that on my walk I got a few thumbs up signs from other walkers. It kinda progressed from there, I would see the same walkers at the same time, and then 1 day I was doing up my laces and someone stopped and say hi. I suddenly found I had a walking buddy. Through 1 person, my social life has expanded and am in a better place. Take the first step - ye newver know what may happen 🙂
