Something’s not right

Not sure what to do

Not sure what to do

Hi,

I’ve been battling bad depression for a few weeks and I’ve tried to reach out for online help but it hasn’t been useful. I have a referral for a new psych and sen my GP and put in place

my usual skills (which I learnt for anxiety) but this is a horrible new dark place for me. If anyone has any advise I would so greatly appreciate it. Thank you.

Hey there @Former-Member ,

Welcome to the forums. Good on you for reaching out.

I sounds like the place you have described is not uncommon. Many people have been through something similar. I know I have certainly have.

It sounds like you have reached out to your GP and got a referral.

What sort of skills did you learnt in the past to help you? Also is there a trigger that has cause this onset of bad depression?

Hi and welcome, @Former-Member , it's good you've joined 🙂

I'm sorry you're feeling this way...I can empathise.

That's good you have a psych appt coming up...how long till you see them?

My strategies mainly revolve around distraction...for me, reading (if I can concentrate). I think anything you can do to get you through till you see your new psych would be good.

You can also call the helplines including the SANE Helpline listed at the top of the page. You can also chat to us all here if you want.

A handy forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply 🙂

Re: Not sure what to do

@Former-Member we have all been through a horrible time or two, ended up deeply down 'n' out, and then finding ourselves less than content, with things.

Make a list of things, a list like:

- things you want to do

- things that have to get done (appointments, groceries, bills etc)

- things you look forwards to, like a walk on a beach

Going through, a simple exercise, like above, should alleviate, your depression, even to a small amount, of lessening the depression

I find exercise is best.

It does wonders for you, in many ways...

Call a counsellor, as a good chat, helps.

Thanks, @Former-Member

Re: Not sure what to do

Hi @tyme thanks for the support and your response.

I was triggered mid December and I guess I’m just battling my way thru a tough few weeks.

I’ve done a lot of skills based work for anxiety as that’s what usually affects me. My bad of tricks for depression isn’t something I’ve had to turn to before so it’s somewhat lacking.

Thanks @NatureLover I did not know about the tagging either very helpful!

I guess I’ve chatted with a few helplines lately and I just had to be a burden on the service for other people in need. It’s hard to share and be vulnerable for me.

Also I tried a puzzle today for distraction great idea thanks

Re: Not sure what to do

Thanks @Member_A Ive tried to much lately to help I feel like a sleeping shark - if it stops swimming it drowns. But doing things has been so hard. I have a mini todo list in my fridge of simple steps and have today at least accomplished most of it. I don’t feel like eating or going out so it’s just small things at home today.

Thanks for sharing.

Can you keep getting the 'little things', done?

Re: Not sure what to do

Hey @Former-Member ,

Good on you for even doing 'small things'. This is an achievement in itself 🙂

What I found with strategies and skills is that if people don't keep practicing them even when things are 'good', then they sort of lose touch with using them when it's needed most.

For example, with deep breathing, I took a long time to get the knack of this skill. I had to practice it EVERYday just to get the hang of it.. now, it's one of the most useful things for me when I feel anxious and just need to take a deeeeep breath.

As for going out, if you don't feel like it, so be it 🙂 There's a time a season for everything.

Hope to stay connected with you here!

Hi @Member_A Not today unfortunately, but tomorrow is another day and I guess I’ll just keep on trying. There’s been so much lovely support here it’s a relief to share.
