OCD or ways of doing things

OCD or ways of doing things

At different times during the last few decades I’ve had people tell me I show OCD signs, things they refer to I have got used to doing but know they are not the same as most people. Looking for any one else who do similar things or OCD in general.

checking locks, both car and household. After locking the car I find myself manually checking 2 doors to ensure the car is locked. Also use the remote to check the car is locked when I’m couple cars away or physically walk back to check drivers door is locked. Regardless whether front door has been unlocked during the day or not, every night before going to bed I have to check thst the door is locked. Any sliding door or window that has been open during the day I have to check is shut and locked before going to bed. Last thing at night have to check garage roller door is fully down, regardless if I’ve been in garage short while before

colours and order of things. My mind is unsettled unless my wardrobe is in a specific order, this including clothing groups must be hung in colour order. Colouring pencils, books are the same. If not in my colour order it feels like my hands are twitching. Playing solitaire, my mind feels unsettled unless the 4 aces are in a specific order. Laundry has to be hung in specific order including colour with colour of pegs being the same as the item being hung up.

Re: OCD or ways of doing things

Hi @Former-Member , I do every single one of those things, plus more. I have OCD. My main OCD focus is on germophobia - this is very strong. But I also do counting and checking too, although I figure they're not as debilitating so I don't worry about them too much.

With the checking thing, I know someone who has been in and out of psych wards for years with it. She has it so bad that she would go into the bathroom to go to the toilet, for instance, and get stuck in there for hours, checking. It sounds horrendous.

Re: OCD or ways of doing things

Yup @Former-Member I also do each of those things. 😔 And many more. So yes I can relate.

I do have a formal diagnosis of OCD. I believe I have always been that way, but it got much worse for me after several traumatic incidents lead to PTSD.

I have mostly learned to accept and live with my many quirks now. With help from my clinical psych. But it can be exhausting at times. For me it escalates with increased ptsd related anxiety. Which makes sense since it is an anxiety disorder.

Can I ask, does it actually bother you, or are you just curious as to why you are the way you are?

Re: OCD or ways of doing things

Hi @Emelia8 @NatureLover Ive been doing these things for ages so just take it as part of me. Doesn’t worry me. At times I will check the front doors are both locked and think to myself, why did you do that you checked them not that long ago.

The pegs needing to be same colour as laundry item has frustrated me at times as don’t have exactly right colour pegs for everything. Having recently bought a dryer that should eliminate that

Yes, I didn't mention the issue of the pegs not being in all the right colours @Former-Member - I just try to align them as best I can! 😄

Hello @NatureLover , @Former-Member , @Emelia8

My husband was diagnosed with OCD years ago

And he believes I have OCD with the things I do

Re: OCD or ways of doing things

@NatureLover I remember visiting a friend when her girls were about 6 and 3. The girls had a set of books where each book was a different colour. Found I couldn’t help myself, had to take the books out of their storage shelf and put them back in colour order. Remember my friend saying in a jovial tone about my being weird and we both had a good laugh. Her comment both then and now doesn’t worry me.

have no idea the source of the order aspect. Source of checking locks would go back to my teen years
