What good is a psychiatrist??

What good is a psychiatrist??

I saw a psychiatrist today hoping for a full review on my mental state.

Well it didnt go as planned.

She didnt want to label anything just medicate what is happening now.

I need help and Im a big believer of getting to the source and not just using meds on the affects.

Im just as lost now as I was before. Thanks government.

Heya there,

I'm sorry to hear that your appointment didn't go to plan.

Were you able to enter the consultation and let the know what you were expecting from it?

To be honest, I haven't had the best luck with psychiatrists, but then again, it doesn't mean it doesn't work.

Perhaps it's important to be quite assertive about what you are looking for? What do you think @NotTheRealAlice ?

Also, I'll send you a quick email.

@NotTheRealAlice Was this the first time you seen this psychiatrist? A one hour consult?

I wouldnt expect much from an initial consultation except for taking a thorough history and yes, probably providing you with some medication to hopefully provide you with some relief from what you are experiencing.

a psychologist is probably going to be more helpful at helping you get to the root of the issue. Yes I talk through things with my psychiatrist, but she mostly monitors my medication and I do therapy with my psychologist to try and address the source of my issues.

hope that helps.

I agree with other posters, but hear your frustration. I definitely believe getting to the source and understanding our emotions and psychosocial circumstances is key to recovery and leading a full life. Meds is seen as a way to manage the intensity. I would look for a counsellor or psychologist who tend to deal with more talk therapy and strategies. We are allowed to have both. Do what you can manage financially and time wise. If this new psychiatrist does not budge from being a med dispenser and cannot see you as a whole person after half a dozen sessions look for another. Wait a bit and try them out first. Who knows how it will develop. It is better than having involuntary treatment orders. I try and work creatively within the system. Sadly I have had no option.

Good Luck with it all
