Growing up with a parent with MI

Growing up with a parent with MI

Anyone else feel guilty to talk about how growing up with a parent with MI have affected them emotionally. My mum isn’t a bad person, she is loving, but I’ve had moments when I felt scared by how strong her emotions were. I don’t burden her with my own MH because she already has a lot on her plate and I don’t want to trigger her because then it feels like my fault

Anyone else feel responsible for parents/parent wellbeing?

there's a theory out there that this is how an anxious people pleaser is born...

I have similar experience @creative_writer

@Kyle1, I do think my parents are both people pleasers too.

I’ve had moments where I felt my mum displayed signs of SI. I was working from home on Monday for uni, my parents had an argument, and my mum got really heightened. I basically had a panic attack, even though I’m not 100% sure, I thought she showed signs of SI from her words

Re: Growing up with a parent with MI

you might have heard of the poet, John donne @creative_writer ?

He wrote that "no man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main" ... or something like that. (The Persian mystic, Rumi, wrote a thousand things along the same lines...)

I happen to believe it true.

As humans (infact, nothing exists in isolation and entire of itself. Everything is conglomerant) we are wired to be a continent of connectivity. And if, indeed, we were but islands afterall, we would still yet be among an archipelago of others, belonging to the one ocean...

With that in mind, I'm not sure feelings of guilt should find a home in us because we have capacity to empathise...

We need to work on reframing this impression, because...when waves impress upon the sand, it is no more the fault of the shore line than it is the tide.

@Kyle1, but don’t you think discussing family matters in therapy violating other peoples’ privacy? I know other people MH can affect your own, but I prefer not to discuss family matters openly.

Re: Growing up with a parent with MI

in as far as your own mh is impacted @creative_writer a confidential therapeutic setting should be an appropriate environment inwhich to disclose relevant information...

Which is why it can be so important and beneficial if you do manage to find a professional inwhom you can depend and trust.

Are you happy with yours? Do you feel like they fit with you @creative_writer ?

Re: Growing up with a parent with MI

@Kyle1, I know it is confidential, but it feels like a betrayal since MH is very hush hush in my family. Getting into seeing a therapist was a long battle with my parents, they wanted to save me from the stigma, but they caved in once I became 18

I think I’ve done enough processing for today. Anyone up for discussion around lighthearted topics? 🙂

Maybe this is an internal thing. I don’t mean to sound judgemental, has anyone ever felt like someone was too needy even if you loved them? Maybe it’s my mindset of “better off alone and I need to be independent”. I grew up with enmeshment trauma
