Triggering TV Advertisement

Triggering TV Advertisement

It’s 10pm on a Friday night and I have just watched a commercial TV advertisement re speaking up about sexual abuse. It comes across a targeting youth/child audience. For me it has been horribly triggering and I’m struggling to manage how I’m reacting. Although I recognise the purpose, I’m questioning if anyone considered how victims of sexual abuse may be impacted by something that I personally find confronting. I’m confused and I’m wondering is this just part of my f**ked brain.

I hear how confronting this ad would have been for you @Fawkes I wonder if you can provide feedback to the organisation involved etc?

Re: Triggering TV Advertisement

Do you mind if we discuss this?

Can you briefly describe the nature of the triggering advertisement and pinpoint exactly which part of it that was so triggering?

We are internet strangers and of course you are better off seeking qualified and verifiable professional help in real life but I know the comfortable anonymity of online messaging boards.

I also have many triggers in my life and have ruined more than few relationships because of it and I just want to help in whatever way I can.

Hey @WokeThisWay ,

If you want to tag someone in one of your replies, you can type "@" in front of their name so they get an email/post notification. e.g. @tyme . That way, they won't miss your posts.

Hey @Fawkes , I believe the above post from @Fawkes is for you.

Hey @Fawkes so sorry that you had to experience this horrible surprise attack while you were just trying to relax and watch some TV.

there is just so much horror in the world and it hard to find a place of peace.

I have just deleted all of my social media because it drenched in triggering material. Not to mention the vile and abusing behaviour of people in the comments section who say things that they would never say to someone else in the real world.

I also understand why they need to do it. They want to try to help kids escape abusive households. I get it. But my goodness, is there a place that survivors can go to just get some peace away from the terrors of the world and constant reminders of abuse.

Im really feeling the dysregulation and pain with you tonight. I fee disorientated, deflated, defeated, angry and scared. I am trapped between fight and flight and can’t seem to settle into peace.

Maybe we are crossing paths for a reason tonight. These forums seem to be one of my safe spaces.

thank you for sharing

Hi @WokeThisWay @I’m not sure if the message was I for me, if so then I’m sorry but I don’t understand the question. Apologies if I come across as being obtuse.

Re: Triggering TV Advertisement

Hi @Fawkes

I don't think we have talked before so it's nice to meet you.

I saw the same advertisement and had a similar reaction to you. As a survivor of childhood SA I found it really triggering too.

It certainly isn't just you, I think your feelings and thoughts are very real and valid. It was quite confronting. Yes I understand the meaning behind it, but it was hard to watch.

I really hope you don't see the ad again and were able to do some things to help yourself out.
