What is this symptom called?

What is this symptom called?

Hi there everyone!

I was just wondering what is it called when there are people around and I don't know where to look?

I think it's paranoia, but I can't seem to find about this anywhere on the internet.

For example, when I'm stuck in traffic and there is another person on the other side of traffic and we're both stuck in traffic, I get paranoid and don't know where to look and I start blushing, get insecure and embarrassed.

Also when I'm stuck in traffic and there is a pedestrian crossing, and when people are crossing the road around me, once again I don't know where to look, and start feeling paranoid, insecure and embarrassed.

Also, when people are in my peripheral vision, I don't know where to look and start feeling paranoid.

If anyone knows what this symptom is called, please help me!

Thank you all in advance and have a great day!

Hey @CharGrilledChar

Nice to meet you here. I'm wondering if it could be considered anxiety? That's how I sometimes feel and I have anxiety.

What do you think?

Hi there!

It's good to know that I'm not the only one going through this!

I have no idea if it is anxiety.. I got diagnosed chronic schizophrenia so yeah..

I still can't find about this symptom, anywhere on the internet..

Perhaps I should ask my treating Dr, I don't know..

Thanks for the reply!

Cheers!

Hello @CharGrilledChar

Many people who have been traumatised exhibit "hyper-vigilance" which means they are forever assessing their environment for sources of potential threat. It arises from a history where the person has been abused and mistreated. I think its a normal reaction to a complex set of variables in someones environment in order to feel and stay safe. I've seen it a lot in the psychiatric community. You could possibly bring it up with a psychologist to discuss it further. I don't know much more about it but hope this may make some sense?

Hi @CharGrilledChar

While I am unable to confirm exactly what it is that has you feeling uncomfortable in the situations you have mentioned, I do lean towards @hanami's suggestion of anxiety.

I think in the examples you have shared; 'social anxiety' may be at play?

This kind of anxiety is sometimes also called 'social phobia' and can make you feel fear around being judged, humiliated or even just being watched by others.

It is something I have experienced myself, and I know how disabling it can be and how it can lead to avoiding social situations altogether.

Does this sound like the kind of thing you are experiencing?

Hi! Yes, that's exactly what I'm going through. I full panic around people and at shopping centres as well, I panic until I buy what I need and getting out of there.

Now that I know it's social phobia, I can rule out paranoia from my list of symptoms.

Thank you for your reply!

Have a great day!

Re: What is this symptom called?

Hey @CharGrilledChar I have felt this before, and I'm not a clinician, but for me personally, it has been social anxiety that would cause some of the symptoms you have mentioned here. Do you think this may resonate for you?
