Talking to your kids about your mental health condition.

Talking to your kids about your mental health condition.

I am a mum with bipolar and recently experienced a hypomanic episode. I was wondering if anyone could recommend any resources for talking to your kids about your mental health condition?

Good morning @BipolarMum,

Thanks for posting and welcome to the Same forums 😃

I can relate to your question very well and have found the following resource to be fantastic: https://emergingminds.com.au/resources/in-focus-talking-with-children-about-parental-mental-health-difficulties/

I found that teaching my kids about my condition has been so valuable. They don't judge, they just want the best for us, my kidlets have learnt to have a lot of compassion because of this 💖

Good luck Mama, I hope you keep us posted on this journey ☺️

I am also a mum with bipolar, it's such a tricky one to know how much to share with them and at what age! I listened to an episode of the 'Going Loco' podcast the other day - it was episode 5, called Performing Normal (Manic) and one of the women that hosts that podcast is a mum with bipolar and she talked about how she went about it with her son, it was interesting and kind of funny! 🤣 So much to bloody navigate!
