BPD diagnosis

BPD diagnosis

I had been functioning under the delusion that I had bipolar 2 for 15 years. My self concept had evolved and I was able to begin to believe that I had some value as a person, as a mother as a friend.

Two days ago I received my BPD diagnosis, along with the mandatory question… “Do you ever feel so out of control that you feel like you could harm your kids?’

I struggle at times, sure, but with this diagnosis I feel annihilated, devalued, devastated.

I wake with the feeling like an elephant is jumping on my chest.

I love my children fiercely.

I am determined to survive this but honestly feeling broken and ashamed.

Re: BPD diagnosis

hi @Lotus2

It's difficult to be questioned and judged as a parent when love has been your only expression. I've gone through similar trials and been left in utter disbelief by it. But then realise some people don't know me from a bar of soap - let them ask their questions, and I will answer. So will my children.

You were asked a mandatory question. But that doesn't have to mean it's an indictment on who you are or how you've performed as a parent.

I don't know any of your backstory or present situation, but I do hope you find some affirmation today that you care, that you matter, that you're fighting on for the good of yourself and your family. 🫂🙏

Re: BPD diagnosis

@Lotus2 I can see you are very distressed about this. Please remember thought hat you have been living with this for basically your whole life. Nothing has changed except for the label. Literally nothing has changed. Find comfort in that. It’s great news that you have finally found a health professional that has been able to accurately identify what this is. Now you can start getting proper treatment.

this is great news. The his is good, not bad. Just remind yourself of this.

it’s understandable that you fee disoriented and distressed. I think this is common for any major diagnosis. Receiving a psychological diagnosis can be terrifying.

also there is a lot of stigma around BPD. The truth is though that There are 4 different types/ways BPD manifest. One particular type is the one that give BPD its “bad name” but people do t actually know that there are three other types which do not present in this way.

either way, whichever type you have, it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you know now and you can start on your healing and recovery path.

there are many BPD survivors here and they will all tell you that the right therapy and tee has changed their life for the better!

remember, nothing has changed for you. Do don’t let three words scare you. You have power now because you can start learning and understanding yourself. You can also meet others and get proper support. This is a good thing

PS. there are many good parents with mental health conditions. Dont let stigma distort your views. Stay true.

Re: BPD diagnosis

Thank you so much for clarifying that BPD doesn’t just have one presentation. That is very comforting. I will read on this further.

Thank you for taking the time to offer support and compassion.

it is deeply appreciated.
