Coping with BPD without medication

Coping with BPD without medication

Hi,

I was seeing a Psych and was given medication. It made me sleepy, no matter when I took it. And it still lingered in the mornings, making it hard to get up, so I stopped taking it. I havent been back to the Psych because I feel she will just give me meds to take, which I'm ok with but its the inital effects that I dont like. So I am currently unmedicated for BPD.

I am finding it hard to cope, especially in social situations, where I have to put "on a front" that everything is ok, when its really not. I dont know whether to pursue medications or to learn other ways of coping. But I am struggling on my own.

Hi @MissMarie85

Welcome to the forums, it's lovely to have you here. It's a good question you ask. I have anxiety and have tried coming off medication several times but always end up back on it. I struggle too much without it. It doesn't cure my anxiety but makes it easier for my mind to talk itself around if you know what I mean. BPD can be very different though. I've heard some people say that psychotherapy works best for it rather than medication but others say both are best. I hope some others can jump in and give you some wise words

Sending hugs

Hanami

Heya @MissMarie85 ,

Very true. I have BPD. Medication doesn't really 'cure' or 'fix' BPD. Medication is more to help you 'feel better' while you develop the strategies to function with BPD.

Now just to confirm, you are referring to Borderline Personality Disorder, right? Not Bipolar?

Re: Coping with BPD without medication

I have a similar issue with being in public, im so good at faking it, but when i get home it all turns to hell. The impulsive decisions and reactions is painful, but i have found medication does not help in a long term sense. I have now not touched medication for 8 years and although i have had periods of extreme irrationality and impulsivity, I have found ways to slowly learn to self criticize in a health way and change my behaviour. I believe we should all try our best without medication, but i am no doctor and obviously some people feel differently.
