Treatment Resistant Depression
Hi
I have been diagnosed since December 2022 with major depressive disorder (Workers Comp) due to an incident at work, I’ve trialled many different types of medications from antidepressants, mood stabilisers to antipsychotics.
I’ve seen a few different psychologists and we are getting anywhere, I keep attending but there is not much discussion taking place. I feel my body has shutdown and has blocked everyone out, I can’t explain or find the right words to say so I don’t say anything.
My GP is ok, she listens but has only just taken over my last doctor so it’s too early just yet. My last doctor gave me a referral for second opinion from another psychiatrist and was told that I have severe treatment resistant depression and that additional treatment needs to be considered.
My Psychiatrist is old fashioned and prefers counselling and medication, he acknowledges that my depression is TRD, the best offer is TMS or ECT however I live 3.5hrs away from Sydney so it makes it more challenging.
I have read and seen the research papers however my Psychiatrist shuts it down and won’t discuss or consider it, I have asked work cover to change my psychiatrist and it has been refused so my only option is to find another psychiatrist at my own cost who knows and understands the benefits of medication and would consider providing a referral to be assessed.
Please let me know if you have any advice on this.
