Autism

Autism

i am finding my head swirling with questions that i cannot answer my whole life they have been questioning if i have autism or not and it never really bothered me either way before but lately it has been bugging me and i find i am full of questions with no answers. everyone seems to have a different opinion and even myself i cannot tell i have some symptoms like i have a lot of sensory issues and some emotional regulation issues and i stim when i am by myself but i dont think i have as many of the social issues well i dont think so i might and just not realise i really dont know and everyone just says it is different in girls but that doesnt explain things either. and if i do have it it might explain some things but then i just dont know. my doctors only focus on my schizoaffective diagnosis which is fine i guess it isnt like there is any meds or anything for autism anyway but idk i just feel like i want answers for myself but i fear i will never know. has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Re: Autism

Hey there @Eden1919,

I can’t say I experienced that exact situation myself, but the journey of questioning and wondering things about yourself and looking for a way of tangibly explaining these things is definitely something that I, and I’m sure others, can relate to. One thing I think is important to keep in mind is that not necessarily every single symptom will apply to every single person, and also not in the same way- like almost everything, it’s as unique as the individual themselves. As they say in the autism community- if you've met one autistic person, you've met one autistic person.

It sounds like the biggest thing for you might be having an explanation for different tendencies you might have, which is totally understandable. From that, I wonder if it might be worth exploring or looking into a little more, in terms of doing a little research, perhaps reaching out to people who identify as autistic. Is this something you’ve started doing, apart from this post (which is a great step)?

A few places you could look at if you'd like is Yellow Ladybugs, which is an organisation specifically for women & girls (+ non binary folk), and also the Autistic Professor, which is the platform of a late diagnosed autistic woman. I hope this might be helpful, but feel free to keep reaching out as you continue to explore this aspect of your identity and I hope others with similar experiences might find you here soon 😊

@TideisTurning thanks i have been looking at others experiences with it but that just brings up even more questions for me which can be really frustrating i am really lost idk what else to do. i just feel like everything is all shaky and unstable like yes i identify in some ways but is that enough idk i am explaining terribly right now but i just feel like i need answers and idk why this has never bother me this much. i really dont know.

Re: Autism

@Eden1919, have you ever tried speaking to a psych or Pdoc about it? A psych I saw when I was 18 was the first person to pick up my high functioning autistic traits. I had no clue that I had it, I think I learnt to mask it over time. Having an explanation does really help explain many of the symptoms I experience. I hope you are able to find answers 🫂💖

Re: Autism

@creative_writer yes i have seen multiple psychs about it and none of them can make up their minds it is always written on my records as "possible" or "suspected" or "traits" of autism but no actual answers they have been questioning this since i was 2 and they still cant make up their minds.

Re: Autism

@Eden1919, there are assessment tools for ASD that are often used. The assessment tool might vary from psych to psych. When I got diagnosed I believe the psych at the time gave my parents a screening tool and just did the regular clinical interview. Do ASD traits resonate with you? Do you feel like it can help explain some of your symptoms?

Re: Autism

@creative_writer sorry for the late reply, some of the traits do resonate with me and i think it would explain some things for sure i guess i just dont know if i resonate with enough stuff idk it is really hard and confusing to be honest.

Re: Autism

@Eden1919, I resonate with certain aspects of ASD and not others. ASD has helped me understand myself in the aspects I resonate with. Maybe it’s not about having a label, but being able to understand yourself better if you resonate with many different aspects of ASD

Re: Autism

@creative_writer yes i guess that is what i am trying to figure out a possible new way of understanding myself perhaps a way to feel more comfortable about myself too like maybe if this is why certain things have been happening i dont have to feel so embarrassed or guilty idk it is hard to explain. the label itself is not so much what i care for but i would like some answers as to why certain things have been happening and why i cant seem to understand them.

Re: Autism

@Eden1919, maybe talking to a pdoc or psych about how you can understand yourself from through ASD. Many people have traits but don’t have the diagnose, it might be a conversation worth having

@creative_writer thanks i tried talking to my psychologist about it and she did say she does consider me as having autism but we didnt get to talk about it much more so idk really i still have a lot of questions.
