skin picking

skin picking

Just putting this out there..and wondered if anyone has problems with skin picking. I cannot leave a scab alone and often I will beak a bit of skin because I think it is not supposed to be there. I think alot when I am doing all this and it often gives me satisfaction. Is this a form of OCD. I'm not expecting to many responses as it is an embarrassing act.

Re: skin picking

Dear @gyp. Not sure if your problem comes under OCD. Have you approached your Dr about this? Constantly picking at your skin or trying to remove scab formation could cause serious infections. The scab formation assists in re-growth of new skin to replace damaged skin. I strongly suggest if you are not seeing a psych or Dr for treatment, it might be a good idea to start getting treatment. Each time you remove a scab, you risk doing further damage to the infected area. Once the scab has completely 'sealed' over the wound, the scab will 'fall off' and the new skin will eventually 'take on' the toughness necessary. It could also be a form of nerves where you 'pick' the skin to relieve your feeling of discomfort being away from your comfort zone. Or if you are itchy where the scab is, that indicates the wound is healing. I would suggest a trip to your Dr first.

Re: skin picking

Hello @gyp

Thanks for sharing your experiences with us on the forums. Do you find that you do this behaviour often? Not everyone who picks their skin has a disorder. A good indication would be if this behaviour is interfering with other aspects of your life, or is a relief from feeling anxious.

If this is something that you are concerned about, I would recommend seeing your GP. They will be able to refer you to a psychologist for assessment and treatment. Treatment can involve, but is not limited to, CBT, Habit Reversal Training, exploring tiggering events and producing alternative behaviour to replace the skin picking. These are just some of the things I am aware of...

I wonder if there are other members who can suggest anything, or have any advice? @Ayesha, @Matty, @Kiera80 or @kenny66?

Take care,

Re: skin picking

Jacinthebox, It was a realization today that I do it but since posting I can relate it to my anxiety. I am going through a tough time since leaving my home a week ago. I saw psychiatrist yday and she said I am in a crisis at the moment. I am not coping well at all and never cease to beat myself for all that goes wrong in my life. I forgive others easily but not myself. I had new sleep meds last nite, I got some sleep and today I feel this feeling of desperation as if I have to run away. I have done this many times before, run to someone or some place looking for relief of my desperation. Today I was also looking up on net how to suicide quietly. I not sure if it is the new sleepers making me feel like this or my depression and anxiety. I only wish I could go to sleep for 8 hrs without meds and wake feeling like a normal human instead of this black slimy thorny mess. I pretty much spent the last 3 days on the bed watching the hours roll by, cant get out the door, no motivation, no emotion. I cant understand how some even on this forum can go to work or remain upbeat with their MI
Just maybe I am not accepting of myself with MI.

@gyp

It sounds like you are really struggling at the moment. Everyone manages their MI differently, so please don't feel like you are doing it wrong. It can take a long time to learn successful coping techniques that work for you - that is why seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist is useful. You are seeking help on this forum and professionally, and that is a very brave step to make.

If you are feeling suicidal, please do try contact:

- Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Crisis Chat

- Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or online counselling

- Your local CAT service

- If in immediate danger: 000

Are you feeling safe tonight? Take care of yourself.

Re: skin picking

Hi @gyp
Skin picking is an anxiety condition and can be treated. I suggest you see your GP as soon as you can since it appears this has only recently started. Although I haven't experienced this myself I know several people who have battled it for years who have with treatment successfully overcome the need to skin pick. It is a recognised condition that tesponds well to treatment particularly if help is accessed early. Thinking of you 💕 🎶

Re: skin picking

Hi @gyp
This has been a problem for me on and off, for my whole life. It is anxiety related, and always gets worse when I am stressed. It has taken a while, but I found that dealing with my anxiety has made it less of an issue. I see it as a sign that I'm not doing well, like an early warning that my anxiety is getting bad again. I know it's embarassing to talk about, but if you have a gp that you trust, or are seeing a psychologist, it's worth talking about. We hide it, because we see it as our weakness, but it's just our way of coping with anxiety. Shedding light on it, while it's difficult to do, makes you feel a lot better in the long run.
Sending you strength and (((((hugs)))))

Re: skin picking

Thx Janee for the reply, yes I since have realised that it is related to my anxiety. I have been highly stressed over the last 8 weeks. I have been suffering with serious sleep deprivation for over 12 months so much that I don't know who I am. Relationship split in last week and technically I am homeless. I have temp accommodation with my son but I am on edge this morning as he and his gf had a nasty argument last night and this disturbed me. I cant leave as I cannot drive at the moment. I am a mess today. Sorry to dump on this site I just don't know who and where to turn to.

Re: skin picking

Hello @gyp, I total understand where you are coming from as I was very bad at this. I do feel it has alot to do with anxiety. But i just want to give you an insight to be careful of what you are continually picking at.

12 months ago I was continually picking at something on my left calf. It go to the stage that one day I stepped out of the 4x4 and knocked it on the step tread. It hurt a bit and i thought I should go and get it checked out. I went to the Dr and asked him to biopsy it. It came back as an SCC activating towards a melanoma. I now have a 50 cent piece size graft in my leg from something I thought was just a sore.

I do not pick as much as I use to and anything that I am not sure about I get biopsied. I am now getting 6 monthly skin checks.

Go see your Dr and get some help. If there is anything strange about anything you are picking get it checked out.
