Challenged by a new Diagnosis

Challenged by a new Diagnosis

Another newbie here. I'm almost 60 and have had a revolving door of diagnoses since my 20s. Just when I thought I finally had THE one that made sense, another one has been thrown my way.

Having been in the system for so long, I understand how diagnosis works and that it is effectively just one person's opinion. Every professional over time has been convinced that their diagnosis was correct and these range from postnatal depression, major depression, all types of anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder, PTSD... and the list goes on and on.

I am now struggling with the possibility that I have Dissociative Identity Disorder. I don't know what to make of this. I've witnessed it in others so I'm not questioning its validity as a diagnosis but me?

I feel like I've been working on getting better for so many years and now I have to start again from scratch. I don't feel like I have enough years left to get over the traumas in m life. DID apparently takes years to sort out. I don't have years left. Am I never going to get on top of all of this and lead that imaginary good life?

Re: Challenged by a new Diagnosis

Hey @Ocean-Blue ,

Thank you for sharing what happening for you right now.

It sounds like you are faced with some challenges in getting this new diagnosis.

I'm curious to know why you think you need to 'start again from scratch'. Therapy and recovery can start at any point. Yes, a label can direct you to certain supports/therapy etc, but I'd encourage you to consider your progress and growth you have made so far. It sounds like you have done your best to better yourself in your recovery and that's what matters most.

You are the author of your journey. We cannot change what has already been written, but we can make a difference to what will be written.

I hope you are able to continue connecting here on the forums and perhaps find some valuable supports and connection.
