HELP!!! triggered for days! needs to stop!

HELP!!! triggered for days! needs to stop!

ok backstory...🤷🏼‍♂️...I have been diagnosed with BPD, ADHD, CPTSD among other things.

So I'm studying mental health at tafe, most of the units require practical assessments were you demonstrate your skills and stuff when talking with a client. Which means we have to play the client for someone being assessed.

While I was pretending to be a client, I started to get distressed so by the end of it, I was shacking, short of breath, feeling vulnerable, dizzy, light headed and nauseous.

After and since I got home I've been secluded and curled up in a tight ball. I think I fell into the "little" headspace which is new for me, I feel like a child that feels overwhelmed and needs lots of comfort.

yesterday/Friday I was feeling sad and cried lots and dissociated

the trigging event happened 3 days ago, how do I feel better????? and get untruggered

Welcome, @littleplant , it's good to have you here. And I like your username.

I'm wondering if you have any professional support yourself? Like a supportive GP, meds, a counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist? I'm thinking that your studies might continue to bring up stuff for you...?

I tend to go to bed, eat and drink comfort food like hot chocolate drinks, and read books. I guess developing a thorough self care strategy would help - a list of comforting and caring things to look after yourself.

An important forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.

Axiatonal meditation enabled me to not get triggered anymore over seeing my old place of residence growing up on the internet, high school, old friends I knew from difficult times in my life @littleplant Axiatonal can shift things for you according to what I read and it worked for me.

Tafe's often have good free supports available to help students wellbeing be optimised so they can study. There may be counselling or other well-being supports available. Is there anyway you could access support like this to help calm you from the triggering experience? What usually helps you when you are triggered? Are there any self-care activities that help you calm, or supportive people you can talk with?

If you are concerned that this type of experience could happen again, if there any way you could discuss this with your Tafe? Tafe's are normally pretty good at accommodating medical needs including mental health. If you are willing to let the Tafe know about your diagnoses, they may be able to put some supports in place. For example: after role plays it could be useful if the tafe staff could check in with how you are going and offer some help with calming strategies (like guided breathing or whatever you would like to suggest), or maybe the whole group could verbally debrief on the situation being role played to help bring you back to your role as students and not end the session with strong feeling of being the person in the role play? Many tafe's have courses for peer workers so the concept of being triggered while working in mental health should not be unusual - they can probably suggest other things that may help.

Re: HELP!!! triggered for days! needs to stop!

I'm no expert but that sounds like really bad anxiety. I use to experience the same symptoms when roleplaying or presenting in front of a crowd.

I am on medication for depression & anxiety. The medication seems to work by blocking out all motions. Now that I am on the medication I can do that sort of thing without feeling anxious.

The downside is that I don't feel emotions very strongly. Which isn't so bad since I didn't experience good emotions without the medication anyway.

I guess some of us are unlucky to have anxiety. I feel like it's something completely out of my control. When I try to reduce my medication, the anxiety comes back. I've also had bad anxiety like this since I was a child.

Is this the first time you've experienced this or does it happen when you are in certain situations?
