Specialist Appointment for Diagnosis

Specialist Appointment for Diagnosis

Trying to get ADHD diagnosis. Told i can go private, when i asked how much, was told $500. I said to my Dr "im on the dole". He did a referral up for the Wheatbelt where i live but travel time 2hrs one-way. I said do they do it on the phone or via teams etc - he said not for the first appointment. I resigned myself to the long trip and waited several days then thought id ring to ensure referral received. The girl on reception couldnt tell me. She said someone would get back to me - i said "when?", she couldnt tell me. I asked her how long to get an appointment - she couldnt tell me, i asked for a ball-park figure, she couldnt tell me. I got a call back same day, and the woman said my referral had been rejected as they dont do ADHD diagnosises - arghhh. Even a person without mental health issues would get frustrated, but with one, you can get even more frustrated and the 2 people i spoke to were ill-prepared to deal with people like me which begs the question "what if any training do they get to deal with those with mental health when these are their customers"? Something missing here i think. The irony is i cant get a job despite a Grad Dip in Counselling and all sorts of experience and skills in this area, yet i have to deal with people who are not suited to the job. So im left with difficulty getting a diagnosis which i need to get on disability because i either cant get a job or hold a job down - why? Is it because i cant do the job? No - its because im different and do things differently - and the workforce doesnt seem to accommodate that. So 10 years ftom retirement i will take my skills, experience and knowledge with me and retire early as i cant handle the treatnent dished out to those like me - what a waste - its not like im not needed out there - i for one know how to speak to those with mental health issues without making them even more stressed. It was a shock - 30 years ago i dealt with this stigma - thought things had changed, obviously not - shame.

Welcome, @Puckermum , and I'm sorry to hear about your difficulties in getting an ADHD diagnosis 😞

Is there any other place you can be referred to for this?

A handy forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.

Re: Specialist Appointment for Diagnosis

I hope so, but the Dr who,did the referral seemed to imply there were 2 choices - pay through the nose or travel 2hrs one way to get a free diagnosis - but the latter is no longer an option. Will speak to Dr again tomorrow. Thankyou.

Maturity brings into light all the incompetencies of the world.

Try not to get caught up in it.

I'm not that mature. But mature people I know show me how much patience and care they have for people who aren't very good at doing things.

Try to work with it.

*hug*
