Racing thoughts or hearing voices?

Racing thoughts or hearing voices?

I very often have what I call "racing thoughts" usually they are about what has happened in the past. Like right now I am mulling over the car accident I had yesterday. If I had have been earlier, if I had have been two feet to the right, if the other car had have been going 20km slower, if I had not have been peeved and not gone out etc etc etc. Also why wasn't I killed, might have been better for everyone(I know this thinking isnt right). The past can go back to childhood and I still do the what ifs. I am over 50 yo.

I read the "hearing voices session" post on here held in May but I didn't answer my questions.

What do I do, I tell them to go away. As a christian I often tell Satan to go away and remind him of his future.

What about you guys?

Re: Racing thoughts or hearing voices?

Hearing voices and racing thoughts are actually a quite common human experience @Arjay. I've been reading that the phenomenon can be caused by trauma. Is it possible that the traumatic event of the car accident has triggered this off?

I've also been learning not to simply ignore these experiences, as they are often have a hidden meaning behind them. For example, I often hear voices telling me to commit suicide even when I am not suicidal in myself. This can mean for me that something in my life is bothering me and a situation has to change immediately.

Hi @Queenie

thanks for your reply. The car accident isn't a trigger as I have had these thoughts for , mm into my third decade??? A long time. Mostly they are about situations where I could have done things differently. I know my previous pdoc who was great said I may have had BPD and I certainly showed signs of this. The episodes have become much further apart over the last 5 years. So that is good. Cant even remember my last one!

I empathise with your comment re suicide. Even last week I had a medical test and the technician came back from the doctor and said "You'll live". I responded "Do I have to?" I don't think she heard me. As I said my first thought re the accident was why didn't the other car come through and do me. I am no way suicidal though.

I am going to see if I can get an earlier appointment with my pdoc and talk about it then.

Cheers

How interesting re.voices..I thought it's what everyone did? Sort of negative self talking..it's weather negative self takes hold to reshape other thoughts, creating thought patterns of a bigger negative cycle etc..

Re: Racing thoughts or hearing voices?

Hello @Arjay,

Having a car accident sounds very stressful and I am assuming would make your anxiety worse, it's really important to take care of yourself and do some things that help make you feel less anxious and calm, are there self-care things that you like to do?

Racing thoughts can be due to many things, but it is important to focus on how they are making you feel, like exhausted, worried, etc? It might not be a matter of telling them to go away but focusing on doing things that focus your shift elsewhere and make you feel a bit better, have you tried this at all before?

Take care,

Lunar

Hi @Former-Member

thanks for your reply. Really the car accident wasn't that bad. It was more the things that went on way before that which I was really concerned with. Yes focussing on other things helps me, as I get involved in any things the mind starts focussing on what is needed instead of wandering wherever it wants. How do I feel? Mostly it is paralysing I just tend to sit and do not much. I suppose that is why focussing is good.

re the car the panel shop says it can be fixed and are now waiting on insurance authorisation. I wil not have it for 2 weeks.

Today I have a little list and am slowly ticking them off.

Yuo are loved.

Cheers.

Re: Racing thoughts or hearing voices?

hey,

It's all about function. Most folks develop certain things that are often parts of mental illness but things like obsessive thoughts, Racing thoughts, Paranoia ......they can all indicate underlying issues which is why you are here.

If there's a history of mental illness in the family it's worth investigating. Saying that ....it's rare that people self diagnose......most of us run into the mental health system when we have no idea about anything.

IF your losing function then seek some help. Funciton is sleeping little, Too many sick days. Unable to hold relationships etc etc.....

A friend,

Rogueone.
