Anxiety and PMS

Anxiety and PMS

I have GAD and Health anxiety, mild depression also, I am medicated and thought I was recovering really well, untill I was due for my period, I have been skipping them on.the pill for last couple of months while getting anxiety under control and my doctor suggested that when. I have a break through spots, to stop and have a period, well I am absolutely beside myself, I am anxious and scared crying don't want to leave the house, cramps and aches, sinus issues, struggling to get through the days, I feel like I have gone backwards in my recovery and I am.starting to feel like this is how I will live for the rest of my life, I have had to take my emergency medication every day, had to leave work early as I just couldn't cope and was crying and anxious, does anyone have experience with this? I am at a loss of what to do? I am talking to my doctor today to try and get answers, but I am sure she wants to give me the implone bar in my arm, I don't know if I should or not. I just am searching for the right answers.

Hi @Michelle13

I totally relate. Hormones issues have been a big part of my mental health challenges. Same for my mum too so I believe there is a genetic factor. I used to take the pill continuously to avoid those hormonal ups and downs. Can you continue to do that? Even through spotting I continued and eventually it stopped. Was easier to put up with spotting than the mood fluctuations.

Sending hugs

Re: Anxiety and PMS

Hi,

So many hugs.

Hormone fluctuations are a big part of my mental health challenges I really resonate with with the fear that for the rest of my menstruating life PMS will seemingly smash any sense of progress I make.

My PMS flare up was last week and I was a mess and am only just recovering from the IBS flare up I gave myself but my emotions are back to a more normal amount of very anxious. Once the hormones settle you will most likely feel calmer.

Unfortunately I don't have any experience with the various menstrual management medicine as I need to talk to a doctor and figure that out for myself (I am truly awful at advocating for myself with doctors) but I do know that people have been able to get relief once they find the right medication so I am holding on to that as hope for us both.

@adrift I hear you! I am now going through perimenopause and just when I thought hormone issues could get no worse, they did. Getting on the right hormone replacement was a must.

Wishing you all the best,

Currently on.the pill. Was having a break.from skipping the periods, but thought I should have a cycle, and everything turned bad, this morning I took the active pill, and spoke with my doctor, we are going to try the implone bar, still feeling anxious and down, but hoping that will all pass soon, I have only just recently noticed the link with my period and having anxiety and panic attacks,

I hope the calm comes soon, I feel like my recovery over the last 8 weeks was going so good, I could function and drive my kids around and do all those everyday things, but now I feel like I am back to square 1..I am hoping the change of contraception may be able.to help me..

@Michelle13 for lots of information about how hormones are related to mental health also have a look at work by Professor Jayashri Kulkarni. She arguably the leading researcher in Australia when it comes to the effects of hormones on mental health in women. Best Wishes
