Hey Loz!
As someone who went through an extremely rough time with my depressive and anxiety disorder two years ago, I can tell you I've been there! I Think my biggest issue was like yours; once I was asleep I couldn't stay asleep, like I kept waking up in the night and I also had visual aura.
One thing I did was just keep trying and trying. I know it sounds hard but if you keep waking up and not going back to sleep, your body will make it a habit. Also, try thinking of things that will perhaps lull you back to a more calm sleep, like: what you are doing tomorrow, or at work, or at uni, or plan a holiday, for example.
Just know, it DOES GET BETTER. One thing that kept me alive was, 1. my support system, and the comforting thought that nothing lasts forever. Absolutely nothing. This will pass and it was brought to you to learn something from it.
If this does continue though and starts to interfere with your life, I would recommend seeing a GP and getting some Melatonin. It's really great and is not as bad for you as prescription sleeping tablets are.
I hope this helped a bit
