Councillor and psychologist clashing???

Councillor and psychologist clashing???

Hi again first off i want to say thank to the sane community who has helped with previous questions. I might be quiet with replies but the answers are read over and over again. Anyway next question.

Does anyone here see both a councillor and a psychologist???

Im seeing a councillor for c ptsd under victims of crime. The wayback prevention service im currently under is pushing me to see there psychologist aswell and i have dr tomorrow for prima referral to arrange for it. Im feeling incredibly overwhelmed and know its going to be too much having to see seperate therapists. I did say previously i didnt want psychologist as its too much but was pressured into saying yes this time round. I dont know if im just being a worry wort. Has anyone seen a councillor for

c ptsd and psychologist for other mental illness and succeeded in both without them clashing???

Re: Councillor and psychologist clashing???

Hey @Butternut I can totally understand your hesitations. It can become pretty intense to be doing so much trauma work all at once. I do feel like there would be quite a few folks here who have many different people in their treating teams - counsellors, psychologists, GPs, community mental health programmes, psychiatrists, etc.

I think perhaps you may not be able to know until you try, hey. You might find that with one person you can work more on past traumas, and another person can help you with day-to-day functioning, for example. You might find it too intense to see more than one practitioner, but you may also find it to be exactly what is needed. Work at your own pace - you could even try to space out appointments, maybe seeing a counsellor once a week and a psychologist once a month, for example.

As for clashes, well that can be tricky. I feel like if you were to get conflicting insights or advice, it could be pretty overwhelming - but at the end of the day, it is your choice as to what lessons, growth, or changes you want to take away from therapy. If you hear one thing from someone, and the opposite from someone else, you can just hold on to the thing that makes the most sense or is the most helpful.

I hope you find the right balance for yourself - it is your own journey, and you get to decide what works best for you 😊💜

Re: Councillor and psychologist clashing???

I have to agree with @Jynx . I've saw counsellor, social worker and psychologist all during the same period. They often said contrary things. Intuition told me what would best work for my situation and hence I took what was helpful from each one, and left what was not helpful.

Also, I noticed that sometimes what each of them said had an element of helpfulness. It may not have been helpful at that particular moment, but it did come back to my memory when it became helpful for a different moment in time.

I set my boundaries, but I was also open to what each person said.

There was a time when I was seeing 2 psychologists on a weekly basis. I would work with one psychologist on certain parts of my life, and work on other things with my other psychologist. Both were helpful in their own way.

All the best @Butternut !

Hey @Butternut id certainly see your hesitation in seeing a counsellor through victims of crime and a psychologist too. Only you will be able to tell if it will be too much, but I guess it can’t hurt to try? If you were able to be very clear with each of them around what you want them to work with you about.

I currently have lots of people on my team; a psychologist, a case manager, a general psychiatrist and an eating disorder psychiatrist, a peer worker. And sometimes my case manager gives me advice or says things that don’t aline with what my psychologist would say…. I tend to listen more to my psychologist.

all the best
