It Sucked! It Sucks!

It Sucked! It Sucks!

Well, it finally happened...my mother in law food shamed me and then acted offended later storming off to sulk. No idea what I originally did wrong to make her angry at me as all I ever am is nice. I really put myself out there to try to please her and she got angry in reply. Her emotional issues stem from long long ago so moodiness is not unusual. The food shaming "Oh! I didn't realise the slices stuck together like that!" and then muttering about pigs. This Christmas was going to be hard for me due to my own Mum even getting lost at church and me upset seeing her like that. I had just shared this with the in-laws. At least father in law was kind, going above and beyond to look after me like family should. His brother was there and witnessed it all...I felt so sorry for him. My hubby just shrinks into himself and ignores it all. I tried to act tough but fell apart pretty quickly and had to take time out. At least "she" was now letting her bad mood out on the garden and not her family anymore. I was super struggling anyway and this has made it all so much worse. I feel lost and alone...I don't want to do this anymore, I just don't. Yes I will be safe, just so you know but it freaking hurts!

I’m not perfect but get triggered by this type of behaviour. I feel your pain. It feels like the perfect storm that needs professional unpacking. My mother is a narcissist and I am a giver like you so I have a feeling your mother in law might be like this. Your husband sounds torn between loyalty and love. I think aside from Christmas, space and help in a plan to overcome the difficulties may be a course of action. Try to protect yourself because it doesn’t get better if you leave it. I’m 60 and wonder why it’s still happening. I’m sure I’ll fall in a heap when my mother passes and wonder why I was ever so mean. So with love in my heart and caring, please try to get someone with a degree to help 🌻

Hey @ButterflyWings I also had difficultly with some people at Christmas. Toxic people can be so petty and they use passive aggressive tactics to try and get away with it.

just take a big break. Distance yourself and maybe get some therapy to process things.

this problem is so common. Just take tare of yourself and give yourself lots of space and self care
