Social isolation after realising your support network is less supportive than you thought
Hi all, I'm new on here and reaching out for some insight, advice, tips. Anything really.
I've struggled with various mental health issues most of my life, however have always managed to keep this under control with the help of therapy etc. General issues were anxiety, PTSD and occasional depression.
However early this year I had an episode, perhaps a nervous breakdown, perhaps a psychotic break... I'm still not sure exactly. Could have been a delayed drug induced episode. But anyway, after reaching out to friends, my "friends" dropped me off at an inpatient facility at a pretty crap hospital where they ended up keeping me for a month, put me on heavy antipsychotics for the first time in my life, had me sectioned off in the area with all the hard cases, it was really scary!!! Honestly, I saw things and was subjected to things I never thought I would be exposed to in my life.
Upon getting out, I found, my entire group of friends had disappeared. Completely. Including those that had taken me to the hospital in the first place.
I live alone and don't have family in the country so did my best to get 'back on track' by myself but struggled. Work told me they didn't think I was ready to be back etc. So I did what I always do when things get way too hard and I ran away overseas. I stayed in Thailand for a couple of months, lost my job due to how long I had gone away and just not come back for etc.
I'm back in the country, it's been a hard slot but I've managed to land another job in my same field and whilst this whole experience has been godawful, at least materially I didn't "lose it all".
However, this group of friends has been my social and support network for 4-5 years now and they're gone. I'm not invited to anything, no one reaches out or responds if I reach out etc. I've pretty much accepted that this particular network is kaput.
What I'm struggling with is what now?? I'm 28, my new workplace is just me and the director working one on one and I have no clue how to go about finding/creating/joining a new group of friends, preferably higher quality friends that don't leave you to your own devices should you fall ill... How do we make riends as grown ups, how do we make friends that we know are a good investment of time etc, as grown ups??
I'm a social person and I miss having people around, I miss feeling like a part of something bigger. I'm lonely as hell and it's affecting my mental and physical health (I've started eating my feelings).
I would love an idea as to how you've rebuilt some kind of social connection after experiencing a severe episode or even just after finding that your current group/s don't hold space for people like us. I just feel like everyone has been very "mental health matters" until they encounter mental health issues that are less "glamorous" or well known. Like, there's all the social support in the world for anxiety/depression/ADHD at the moment but the minute you don't fit into a box that makes sense to the average layperson; you're a pariah.
Help..?
