Depression and suicide thoughts

Depression and suicide thoughts

I have recently been diagnosed with depression and it has hit me very hard, I don't have the support around me that I thought I did and has come as a huge shock to find that the family I thought would always be there for me aren't. The hardest part is the constant thoughts of ending my life, they never stop.

Hey @Redneck76

Welcome! I am glad you have found us here. Thank you for sharing your story.

It sounds like things have been really tough. A new diagnosis can be a really challenging time, especially when the responses of those around us aren't as supportive as we might have hoped.

Depression is so, so hard. I have had it myself for a long time and it can be difficult to explain to people just how much it wipes you out.

It might be a good time to check out what other supports might be helpful for you, when you are feeling up to it. Your GP is a good place to check in, SANE also offers a range of services too for support.

Of course, if you feel you may need more immediate support today please feel free to reach out to any of the following:

Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Crisis Chat

Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or online counselling

Samaritans: 135 247

If in immediate danger: 000

I hope that this can be a helpful space for you to connect with others. You are not alone 💛

Sounds like you are having a horrible time.

I hope that you have been referred to a good psychologist and are being given some medication to help. It might take a while to find the right medication and to figure out what the root cause of the depression is. Many time depression is actually a symptom of another health condition. If it was your GP who diagnosed you I would highly recommend getting a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist to give their opinion as GP’s can be quite clueless around mental health (as much as they mean well).

Im sorry that your family have failed you. It is also not uncommon for people with toxic family to develop depression or have worsening symptoms because of a lack of support. Healthy relationships and support systems (including medical) are key to stability, happiness and recovery.

get yourself lots of support and surround yourself with good people.

I am very worried about how these suicidal thoughts are affecting you. if you become worried that you might act on it or loose control please call the CATT team in your state so they can asses you and just sit with you if that’s what you need.

I have a psychologist which is in another state. I'm in adelaide. I am on medication. This is the loneliest and darkest place.

Re: Depression and suicide thoughts

@Redneck76 I'm very sorry to hear, and I can empathise as I've been there a lot in my life, including 3 years in bed with severe depression and SI (suicidal ideation).

Thankfully I haven't had severe depression now for 14 years, just regular SAD depression (Seasonal Affective Disorder). What changed for me was that the anti-depressant the GP had me on wasn't strong enough. After a trip to the ED, I got referred to a psychiatrist (I'd never had one before) who put me on a stronger med straight away. She also provided talk therapy.

I'm wondering if you could get a review from a psychiatrist?

A handy forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.
