Tw: rape/sexual abuse and suicide HARD DAY/STILL GRIEVING

Tw: rape/sexual abuse and suicide HARD DAY/STILL GRIEVING

Content/trigger warning

Hi all,

So I struggle at this time of year because out of everything I've been through the experience when I was nine is the one that still affects me the most.

My best friend and I went through a park one afternoon to get back to my foster carers house which she came to most afternoons because her parents worked.

We weren't supposed to go through the park but we were 9 and it was like 15 extra minutes to walk around it, also we were never told why we weren't allowed to go through the park. We'll we were jumped and r*ped by 4 boys late teen/early 20s.

Give my history, I had already developed the strategy of retreating inside myself till it was over but my friends screams kept bringing me back to the surface.

When they took off I helped my friend and we snuck into my foster home through the back and went my room.

I knew she was in a bad way but she made me promise not to tell anyone, so we kept it secret and after a few days she seemed back to herself but 2 weeks after the incident she didn't come to school and because her house was pretty much across the road from the school I snuck over there during lunch. I found her in her bathroom, she had 'hurt' herself bad and it didn't look like she was breathing, but what got to me the most was her eyes were still open glassy and unmoving. I ran back to the school and borrowing another friends phone I called her parents but I just told them that she hadn't come to school, I didn't want anyone to know I was the one to find her first.

So to this day 20 years later everyone still believes her mother discovered her.

But what is the hardest part is that the ambulance report said she had passed in the 40 minute period, I was there right at the beginning of that period and instead of helping I ran away. I struggled with guilt of she was probably still alive when I was there and the last thing she would have seen was her best friend running away.

I found out 2 days later that she has written a note to her parents telling them everything, which they told to the police but despite them trying I never said a word to them. I stopped eating and drinking so after a few days of having to physically force me to have water my foster carers took me to the hospital and told the social worker they weren't taking me back. I missed her funeral because of that and today is 20 years since she left the world and I still can't even bring myself to visit her grave or talk to her parents who still live in the same house.

So hard @Twilightsomniac

Triple whammy, with the r*pe, the finding her and the suicide.

Quadruple whammy for being in foster care at the time.

Your closeness to the situation does not equate with blame.

You cannot be held responsible as you were only 9, and were processing so much.

I am not sure how effective any therapy or counselling about it all has been.

This is a big step, to share it online.

Wish I could take the pain away, but the funny thing with that kind of trauma, in my experience, is it has its own timelines. I do not want to diminish your extreme experience.

I can listen and sit with you.

I have had similar but different experiences as a child. Eg., State Wardship, Jumped on by 4 boys in park when I was 9-10, other physical, emotional and sexual abuse, and loss to suicide.

It is very sad but also comes with the demographic of people who have lived through those things. I have a lot of anniversary triggers too.

There is no right way to grieve. Your path is what works for you, to honour your experience. I am learning that it is never over, but gradually, I have put some things to rest, so that I am more free to live in my present in this day and age. Having survived such experiences can also be a source of pride, that you have the resilience to survive and still be here. Its very complicated, with lots of layers.

Do you have a treating team now?

If you want to tag me use the @and tag my name.

@Appleblossom ,

While I have got professional help and I have mentioned this friend in therapy I don't really talk to them about the r*pe or suicide or how it still affects me I just sort of brush over the topic so I'm talking about it here, I don't know why but it's easier to write/type about it than to talk about it.

But thank you for being here/there

Hi @Twilightsomniac,

I just finished reading your moving post. I am so sorry this happened to you and your friend. I can only imagine what you have gone through. I totally understand why this is so triggering for you.

You are brave to tell your story and I hope through sharing it in a small way may help you a little. This is a lot for you to keep to yourself, and for so long.

You were so young, you must have been so scared and confused by what you both had gone through. You and your friend did absolutely nothing wrong - I used to go through the park on the way home from school because it was quicker even though I was told not to. I'm sure thousands of kids have also done this (and will continue to do this).

I can only imagine the trauma you must still be going through all these years later. To find your friend like that; it's would be an enormous thing for anyone to sit with let alone after what you had already been through.

You did everything you could have done by calling her parents. You should be proud of that - what else could such a young person do? I have no doubt you probably didn't really comprehend what was going on, what you were seeing, how to respond. You did the right thing - you called her parents and got her help as soon as you could. You didn't run away from your best friend, you ran to get her help - that makes you an amazing best friend.

Do you have a professional to talk to? Your story is something that I would really encourage you to unpack with a professional. Maybe a trauma specialist?

While SANE is here to support you as much as we can unfortunately, we are not a crisis centre. For you, or anyone reading this that needs help please contact:

- 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732). This is a confidential 24-hour helpline for people who have experienced sexual assault and domestic violence. They have trained professionals who can talk to you about how you are feeling, and help you work out what you want to do next.

- LifeLine on 13 11 14 for mental health support

- In the event of an emergency please call 000.

As mentioned above, while we are not a crisis centre, we are a place for support, safety and to share our lived experiences.

Sitting with you and sending you empathy and understanding.

@Twilightsomniac

Tbh I have not shared a lot of my deep intimate experiences with therapists, but found I could type more easily than speak about those kind of things. If I tried to go near them in a session, I would get tongue tied and start to rock and not find any words. I have a current new counsellor. Here's hoping this one will go the distance and provide the support and trauma informed tools.

I also have only recently started looking at my own trauma experiences, as proximity to others in severe circumstances tended to take precedence. Kind of similar to you, in that you felt sworn to secrecy and so swept your own trauma under the carpet.

Underneath all the things you posted is also the previous experiences that lead to your placement in foster care. Go very gently with all that, tho that said, sometimes things can come out more explosively. A lot depends on temperament and all sorts of things ...

For me the forum has been helpful, as I can be more in my head and intellect and type, and allow only small amounts of feelings that I can adequately cope with, up into my consciousness. Kind of my defensiveness and coping strategy for all the trauma. I feel like I am connecting my frontal cortex to my experiences now, rather than back then. Just had to keep on moving on.

Hi @Appleblossom,

I just wanted to say thank you for sharing your experience. I am really sorry that you have gone through so much - to be brave and kind enough to share your experiences to help support others is testament to what an amazing person you are.

I really appreciate how you talk about using lived experience as a platform for a sense of pride around resilience and survival.

We are very lucky to have your wisdom and kindness on the Forums. You really embody the power of peer support.

Warm wishes,

Hey @Twilightsomniac

What you know now, is not what you knew then. There's no book to tell you the right way to handle those situations so I hope at some stage, you can cut yourself some slack. I am glad you are talking about it now and i hope this is a stepping stone to you being able to talk about it more.

OMG @Twilightsomniac 😮 I was horrified of reading of your terrible trauma when you were 9 😞

And yours too, @Appleblossom 😞

OMG.

I can only hope that you feel able to write some of it down to share with your therapist @Twilightsomniac ...

Wishing for some healing for you both, @Twilightsomniac and @Appleblossom 💔
