Acceptance of Depression

Acceptance of Depression

During a recent counselling session, I was advised to try to accept my depression/anxiety. Can anyone give me some insight into how to go about this and whether anyone has found calm/peace/contentment practicing this. Both are a constant lingering for me but some days, a trigger will set me into a downward spiral and before I know it, another day has passed filled only with despair. I have adverse reactions to medications so need to find other ways to handle this. I appreciate any advice offered 😄

No. I don't accept that. I have pictures of Jesus all over my studio apartment and talk to Him. He's making me better a little bit at a time. Thru NDIS I have weekly psychology to deal with my childhood traumas. And why I did certain things to cope. Has a life experience caused your depression.? Dealing with it is the way to go with a psychologist. Maybe a different one. You may have to try several till you get one that understands you.

I found peace thru an occupational therapist. She got me to buy a weighted blanket to sleep under for a good night's sleep. A massage chair. Target $150. Sits on a chair rubs up and down your back relieving stress. Fidgets to handle and feel. Comforting on buses... she gave me a weighted gorilla to hold close. Then she said she had done all she could and got me weekly psychology thru NDIS.

Re: Acceptance of Depression

I was diagnosed with depression and anxiety in my teenage years and am now in my forties. I have learnt to manage it reasonably well. I think accepting I have the condition is the first step, if I don't acknowledge it I cannot hope to understand it. Accepting does not mean giving up, it just means admitting that you need some help and to learn some management techniques.

For me personally I have found not drinking any alcohol or taking other drugs to be beneficial. Also group therapy, counseling, exercise, psychiatry and minimal medication has been part of my recovery.

@pjc1965 I'm religious and get peace by "your version bible app". You can pick a topic. There's lots. Anxiety is my one

Depression, love, o can't remember any others. You can get daily scripture on the topic spoken to you. God created YOU so He can have a relationship with Him. So few do so. God is love. God is peace. Satan is a liar and talks to us too. He taunted me for decades.

Yes! @LivingClean is 100% right. No ALCOHOL or illegal drugs. I used to drink 8 beers a night. Next morning and all day was a struggle till I got home and drank again. EXPENSIVE.! It took me 6 months off alcohol to decide to never drink again. My sobriety was forced upon me. I was imprisoned. Best thing that ever happened to me. By far alcohol is the worst drug. And it's legal.

Re: Acceptance of Depression

This is an interesting question and great to hear others' experiences and thoughts.

I agree @LivingClean that accepting depression doesn't mean giving up, but it can mean not letting it get in the way of doing what you want to do. @Krishna you could read a bit about acceptance and commitment therapy to understand a more about how this kind of approach works.

@pjc1965 it sounds like not drinking alchohol was a bit of a breakthrough for you. It can be so different for everyone, what it is that creates a shift with a mental health. I'm glad you are getting some good support now 🙂

@Krishna it sounds like it has been a long road of trying different things. I hope it goes well with the new psychologist.
