Painkillers and moods

Painkillers and moods

Hi everyone

I am just wondering if anybody knows if strong painkillers can cause a feeling of anger as well as really sad thoughts? I have been in hospital for 24 hours and was given 3 times a strong pain killer during this time as well as intravenous antibiotics.i came home27 hours ago and no more pain medication since then. But I got this irritability and feeling of anger causing pressure on my chest. In addition tearful and dark thoughts. Has anyone ever experienced such a thing? Does it have to do with the medications from the hospital? Is this possible?? I am diagnosed with bipolar disorder and maybe the whole experience triggered an episode? I would love to hear what people think ?

Hey @Olga ,

I hope you are feeling slightly better having come out of hospital, but I can hear your concerns in terms of having strong meds and the possible side effects.

Without disclosing the names of medications, I hope the community will be able to support and enlighten you - it is certainly beyond my expertise.

Great to see you around @Olga 🙂

Re: Painkillers and moods

I'm sorry to hear you've been unwell @Olga .

I don't have experience of strong painkillers but when fighting infection and for a while afterwards I can feel very low.

Hopefully you're over the worst of it now you've had treatment. Are you sleeping OK?

Take care.

Hi Olga

I have come across a medical phenomenon of sudden cessation of heavy painkillers causing psychotic symptoms. It can happen if a person is more sensitive to painkillers and they are stopped too quickly so perhaps in future ask the doctor to ween you off gradually.

Best wishes

Emma

Hi @Dimity , thank you for your support. I slept quite well first night home from hospital cause I got so little sleep there I guess and I will see what next night brings which is about to start...interesting that you also felt low after infection and being sick, so that gives me hope that I will recover with some rest., both physically and mentally Take care and nice weekend 😊

Thanks @Emma.for sharing this. This is quite interesting. I didn't have psychosis, thank God but I am sure the abrupt cessation can then lead to other mental health problems as well. Thanks again and take care

Re: Painkillers and moods

Hi @Olga

my mood drops with any infection, surgery, hospital admissions. My body is tired then, my mind is tired from anxiety,

im I’m a new environment and a situation I can’t control, so my mood drops, significantly and for a while. I’ve learnt with time that this is for me not an indicator of the start of a depressive episode.

Although there’s one pain medication given after surgery that switches me into euphoria after waking, I found it actually quite hilarious, but it’s been noted that I cannot receive this anymore. Again it was temporary and didn’t trigger a full blown manic episode.

Everyone is different. Hope you feel better soon!

No. I had a strong pain medication this year. One dose. Nothing dark. There should be a meds phone line. How about a pharmacist or googling for someone to phone. Might be hard to find someone on the weekend.

Re: Painkillers and moods

@PJC yes you are right. I phoned a Mental Health line and they also thought 3 doses so long ago is unlikely. They wanted to access my hospital notes and ring back in half hour. That was over an hour ago and no call. Must have got busy with an emergency. But as another writer suggested that this whole experience may have put me out of normal rhythm I will just carry on and see if I get through it. It comes and goes. I can always access the Mental Health team. At least I am proactive now which is a good sign . Thanks again.
