Scary health issue

Scary health issue

I'm wondering how to navigate my diagnosis of MPN (blood cancer). I'm struggling with how to tell people and balance it during times when I don't feel so well and need to rest. I keep having feelings of guilt, and letting people down. I get a bit tired of people saying "but you look so well", but I'm sick on a cellular level, you can't see my struggle on the outside.

Hi and welcome, @JVR

I'm sorry you have this diagnosis 😞

Do you have a counsellor to help you navigate through this?

A handy forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.

Re: Scary health issue

That's tough, @JVR. I am so sorry that you have to deal with such a difficult situation. Wipe thoughts of letting people down out of your mind. Nothing is the same as it was before your diagnosis. You have to adjust to this new situation and put your own health and well-being first. You must still be in shock. I only have words to offer and wish there was more I could say other than I wish you well. Take care of yourself. Sending best wishes.

Welcome @JVR re Scary Health Issue

I am new here as well. No one really knows what you are going through but you. It is so annoying when people say "You look good, or you look fine" when inside you feel quite ill. I too have an invisible illness that I struggle with every day and night.

I have given up on explaining my illness/ disability because it becomes exhausting and depressing. The best thing to say to people is I have blood cancer and leave it at that. If they ask questions tell them to google it. That takes a lot of pressure off you. We also have Google to help us navigate support organisations. I find it helpful, and I hope you find this forum helpful like I am. Listen to what your body needs and rest when it tells you to rest. Your body comes first. Stop feeling guilty and worrying about others, and take good care of yourself. Enjoy your day @JVR 🙂

Re: Scary health issue

Hi @JVR

Sorry to hear of this diagnosis. I hope you can get effective treatment.

I don't have a lot to offer, but I would echo @NatureLover about having a counsellor. Or at least, do you have contact with a social worker at a hospital? I know they helped me a lot through my treatment.

But yes, it is a hard thing to negotiate on all levels, including how, and how much, you tell various people.

As for guilt, that should not enter your mind (but I realise that, once it is there, it can be hard to shake).

All the very best with it
