Work - a whinge

Work - a whinge

Sorry, this is a rant I need to let some steam off so I don't do anything rash and I don't have another sage space to do so.

I'm having an awful day at work. In an office of 5 I'm the only one doing actual work today, three have been doing training, and the other one has spent their day watching Trevor Noah comedy specials.

I go to lunch and get a message from my manager that a client came in and they asked him to come back in half an hour when I was back (still had 45mins of lunch). When I asked why my colleague who was watching videos didn't see them, I got no answer other than she had 'reiterated' that my colleague was supposed to be doing something.

I get back from lunch and am fixing an IT issue (not for myself) and have manager asking me question after question regarding a phone call she's on, which she eventually hands off to me for the person on the other end to tell me that I'm entering data wrong, even though it's verbatim how I was told to enter it, so now I have a meeting to attend about that next week.

My manager then asks me (now that I'm back at my desk doing my actual work instead of ad hoc it support) if I have found some more work to do, whilst one colleague is sitting on LinkedIn, another has left for the day and the third is doing more training.

Tomorrow State and National manager will be here, I'm considering writing a resignation letter to hand them because I can't do another day like today. In angry at Manager for not doing anything, I'm angry at myself for reacting this way and I'm angry at colleague who thinks it's ok to do no work and take home the same salary as me.

Is that standard behaviour at your place of work, @welcome_snacks? It's no wonder you need to let off steam. You must be a good worker they take for granted. Think carefully before you act, but act if you think it your only option. I don't know what's wrong with people. You'd think you'd be appreciated.

Sending best wishes.

Thanks @Historylover it's not standard, but nothing is at the moment, lots of transition, changing contracts etc. The particular colleague I'm referencing isn't exactly someone you'd call industrious at the best of times, but we were both pulled off a project to be trained and ready in the role we're in now. Thanks to them not pulling their weight I'm left holding the ball while everyone else catches up.

I've taken the dog for a long walk to sweat it out, I'm still angry but I'm not going to type my resignation just yet. My manager's manager and their manager will be in the office tomorrow, and I'll request a discussion with them first. I really enjoy this job, just not this nonsense.

Stick it out, @welcome_snacks. It sounds like you thoroughly enjoy the work normally, so this was just a very bad day. Here's hoping things will even out soon–including the workload. It will be good if you can have a decent discussion tomorrow. Keep cool and good luck.
