My story with psychosis, depression, recovery and relapse

My story with psychosis, depression, recovery and relapse

In 2015 I had been using drugs for about 12 months, I was 21. I went through a period of psychosis, thinking I had magic powers and stuff, when that ended I became very depressed. One day after drug use and something changed in my brain, I went into extreme panic, couldn't think straight or talk properly. The next day I was still the same, and I noticed I couldn't recall words or hold a conversation. This went on for 6 months. Eventually my psychiatrist put me on medication. I was also taking an anti psychotic for the chronic distress and panic thay was constant. The medication bought me basically back to normal, happy and confident. Over the last 7 years I have tried tapering off medication, but unfortunately and to my devestation my symptoms would return. I couldn't think straight, hold a conversation, recall words, even making dinner and driving became incredibly difficult. The last time I tried to taper off was 12 months ago, which ended terribly, so I decided I would accept that I would be on this medication forever, and it was worth it to be able to function and live happily. About 2 months ago I began to suffer symptoms of depression, and more recently my cognitive abilities have declined. Even though I have not reduced my meds. This is frightening for me, because it could mean my medication is not working anymore. I am trying to stay really positive and not let myself panic and become suicidal, because before I was put on these meds in 2015 I was suicidal. I have been considering my options if the meds fail, because of age or tolerance... I was looking into ECT which seemed to some to be a miracle cure and to others a curse they regret. Being that my cognitive problems include memory problems it could make me a lot worse. I'm not completely ad bad as I am with no meds, I can still go to work at the moment but everything is very difficult for me to do. I try to be gentle with myself and not catastrophise. I don't think I'll ever get to be a wife or mother because of this illness, which I have started to accept.

I hope and pray my medication starts working again, or that I can heal. I pray to God to comfort me.

I've never written on a forum before so forgive me if I sound awkward, I also struggle to express myself right now please forgive me.

I can say that the best thing I have decided to do is under no circumstances compare my life and my mental health to that of others. When I do that it hurts me so badly. So I avoid doing thay as much as possible. This helps.

Hi @Christheart ,

Thank you for being so brave and posting such an incredible recount of resilience and your quest for recovery.

For me, as much as I dislike having to take medication, I've come to the conclusion that if I want to live a functional, satisfied life, it's totally okay. I'm also working to reduce my medication due to side effects, but I am stretching this out over a course of a number of years so that my body has time to readjust. Even though it is ok for me to reduce my meds within a few weeks, to be on the safe side, I've chosen to do it extremely slowly.

Then again, when I spoke about reducing meds to my treating team, they said, "if it's not broken, why fix it?" - True that.

Whatever it is, I admire your resilience and hope.

All the best,

tyme

Hi Natasha, Thank you for sharing such an honest and compassionate account of you and psychosis. It is a story of someone bravely persevering with very difficult and scary symptoms but managing to survive and even thrive. Just by sharing you've given hope to many others Your anxiety about the drugs working is very understandable and I'm sure someone on here will give you confidence in these or alternatives. To me you are a hero and I guess this illness has helped you to be a better and stronger person in many ways. Prayer is good. It's at least a basic form of meditation and comfort, at best its communicating with a father in heaven. A loving and kind being who knows your needs and has helped you to achieve them.

You appear to have worries of a romantic relationship because of your condition. Don't despair in this. I for one am moved by your story and situation and would love to form a friendly relationship with you. There will be others who will want to have a romantic affair with you too . I'm sure.

My daughter started with psychosis last year. She is forty soon. It started with a fixation about her ex. She would want to meet him. Later she would think she saw him. She would blame her parents and friends for him not turning up and thinking he was talking to us all. She would go on about him for ages and accuse family and friends of either putting him off her or talking to him.. Some of her friends think she's crazy and have withdrew from her. Understandable really because they are ignorant of psychosis. We as her parents even thought she was at least silly at first. but we've come to understand her condition and that she needs help. She thinks there's nothing wrong with her and won't get help. She won't believe us and thinks we're liars. She finished in this relationship about two years ago and was cool about that then. But she's had stress and grief since from her divorce and her child's restraining order etc. Which I think triggered the psychosis. She phoned us several times tonight. Started with her child playing up to why isn't he turning up? To anger to tears.. But reassuringly she's beginning to think her ex didn't want to get involved because of her not having full custody of her daughter, our granddaughter. She also mentioned she will be moving on from him soon. These appear little steps but to her and us they are massive and gives us as her loving parents great relief and hope that she's recovering.

I am hopeful you will find peace and happiness and a loving relationship, its just a matter of patience and time. Meanwhile we like you will continue to persevere and even help others in similar situations. Thankyou again for sharing and we hope someone here will reassure you about your drugs. I have heard short 10 min sessions of meditation twice a day once before you get up and before dinner is helpful. Must be short though because longer and it can worsen psychosis or induce it. I hope someone here will confirm this for you. Will someone here please help Natasha with her worry about her drugs not working and perhaps reassure her of alternatives. By the way the meditation I do is for 10 mins before I get up, 10 min before dinner. I relax and breathe in counting to three then breath out counting to three again for 10 mins. It's that simple but can have great benefits. Also I do brisk walks of 20 to 30mins a day. This has proved to be a magic bullet for depression anxiety and stress.

With love Anthony
