New OCD and ASD Dx

New OCD and ASD Dx

Hi

I am an infrequent visitor here. I try to give back where I can, but I feel all take. So, sorry

Tuesday, I finally had first psychiatrist appointment in several years

My case manager had done a great job with filling him in beforehand

He asked me a few questions. Asked if any additional diagnosis had ever been added to schizoaffective disorder

I didn't think much of the questions

He got me to confirm that I generally refuse to discuss sleep etc with case manager. That I am 42, single, no kids, 1 GF in all that time in early 20s

He asked me if anyone had ever mentioned autism. And I said no. He asked if I had ever wondered. And I said only with having so much in common with my nephew

So I have to do a scale test. To help them guide how to deal with me. I have been reading a little. And "Meltdowns" happen. Especially being lectured by health professionals about sleep hygiene and social support

Then, he said we'd discuss the issue with intrusive thoughts, and said "You've been sending people emails" and I said yes. Explained that it helps quell the violent thoughts

He explained OCD in general terms. Then said that the grumpy old man letters were my compulsion to quell the thoughts

It's a lot to get my head around. The appointment lasted over an hour

We discussed some medication options. Which will come later

I am happy to have some answers. It helps. But also raises more questions

"Accept uncertainty" raises too many questions IMO

Hi @DogMan79 , that seems quite confronting, having two new diagnoses in one hit.

I wonder if you can get the questions answered in a further appt? When are you seeing him next?

(You're a good writer, by the way!)

Hi @DogMan79 ,

Thank you for posting.

Sounds like there is a lot happening for you at the moment. How do you feel about receiving the new diagnoses?

Re: New OCD and ASD Dx

This thought is coming from the point of view of a self-identified sufferer/advocate/survivor of AVPD (avoidant personality (I also call it "clinical-self-consciousness"). It might be worth looking at where you're at on the attachment spectrum. Attachment issues are in the same "cluster" as OCD. They're different but both sort of "nervousness-based".

If you're interested, my favourite source is Ryan Liberty. A clinging type that specializes is talking about the retreating type. Not a psyche, just someone who wants to work it all out. Most psyches also know their way around attachment theory.

It's one of those things that affect most of us at least a little bit, one way or another. Some tend to cling and others tend to retreat. Finding a healthy balance (or "healthy attachments") usually = progress for most people. It takes a village and all that.
