Something’s not right

depression

depression

Hi everyone, First post for me. I have Depression & take medication. I am not feeling unhappy, am not anxious at all, just feel extremely flat, unmotivated, like everything that needs doing is huge & I just cant manage it. The objective side of me says - just do it, but there is this 'something else' that is dragging me down. My big envy is Morning People! ha ha! mornings are horrible for me, again I don't feel sad or unhappy, in fact the opposite, but I wake up wanting to stay in bed & when I think about the day ahead it all seems to much. I tell myself 'just have a few coffees & your pill, then think about it ', I wont even answer the phone until I've done this. It leaves me thinking I'm wasting hours of my life, that if I went away on say a holiday it'd be wasted on me due to the amount of time I need to get going each morning. My GP recently increased my medication, but so far absolutely no difference! Any words of wisdom out there?

Re: depression

How long have you been taking your medications for? They say that anti depressants should only be used between 6 to 12 months if things aren't going so well. I took myself off of mine about a year ago because I felt like they were making me feel worse after 13 years. Felt alot better for it. But if you don't feel safe with yourself I'd consider other alternative and further medical advice.

Hi @mabel1

Welcome to the Forums! I am glad that you have been able to share your story.

It is such a tricky thing to get that balance right. It can be a process of trial and error which can be an overwhelming prospect. It can take people several attempts at fine-tuning dosages or the medication type to finally find a good fit.

You have every right to speak up to your doctor if it just isn't working for you after some time.

It is a tough journey to be on and I can see how hard you are working each day. This takes strength. It can be hard to give ourselves recognition for the ability to get through each day.

Take very good care of yourself. We are sitting with you here on the Forums 💛

Kind regards

No words of wisdom, my friend @mabel1, just commiseration. Sending best wishes for better times ahead.

Re: depression

no I don't think coming off them is the answer for me. When I started on them some years ago it was life transforming - lierally! I changed medications about 6/7 years ago when being treated for breast cancer as the original med was contraindicated by the cancer meds. This second med has been just as good, but I may ask the GP about returning to the original med.

Re: depression

Thanks for your words of wisdom, much appreciated! Ive wondered about (now I forget what its called exactly..) trans-cranial magnetic therapy...is that what its called? I've had 2 friends have great success with this. Do you know much about it? Keen to get back on top of things as its not just my life that affected, I have a son who has Down syndrome & in order to ensure his quality of life I need to have the energy & motivation to get up & go out etc.

Hey there @mabel1 . Good reflections. I really like your holiday scenario. You remind me that in a way, every day is a holiday (or at least has holiday-like opportunities).

Thinking about, what I'd call my "wisdoms lists", you're also reminding me of this little trick. Couldn't find the find the vid' I leaned the trick from, but this one says it pretty well.

Re: depression

Hi and welcome, @mabel1 , it's good to have you here. 🙂

Gosh, that sounds familiar...not able to get up and face anything.

I don't consider those morning hours wasted, as you (or me) are psyching up to face the day. Very important.

I hope your meds will kick in soon, but if not, then you can ask for something stronger.

A handy forum tip is if you type @ and then click on a name in the drop-down box, that person will get a notification and won't miss your reply.

Re: depression

I see what you are saying about psyching up for the rest of the day, its a positive way to view things & I like it! However I have an adult son who has Down syndrome & need to ensure his quality of life & all that that involves, so it'd be great if I can find a way to function in the mornings + some motivation.
