Relapse

Relapse

Well ive had four weeks in hospital having twelve rounds of ECT. I came home feeling better than i went in. But that has been short lived. I now appear to be in a mixed episode. Im very irritable, aggitated and at times feel very aggressive. I saw my psychiatrist on Monday, and Needless to say he is not happy, and now wants me back in hospital for more ECT. Only problem it is difficult to get a single room. I could have a two week wait. I was in a shared room for two and a half weeks, and i couldn't stand it any longer (social anxiety) i packed my bags and was ready to leave. Now because i said i will not go into a shared ward, it looks like a two week wait. He has adjusted my meds which is helping a bit. I said to him at the time, and i still feel this way. Its a good thing all my meds are at the chemist for webster packs, as i would take the lot the way i feel. I am so tired of the constant struggle. I keep ending up in a very dark place, no matter what i do, however much effort i put in. I cant do this anymore. I dont see an end in sight. Its just more of the same, and it seem like it is getting progressively worse. This is no way to live. It isnt living it is barely existing. I want some relief. Somehow.

Re: Relapse

Hi @Chris,

It sounds like you are going through a really dark time. It is brave of you to still be talking to your psycholoist, and looking for ways to get out of this headspace. I really hope you get the single room you need shortly.

I wish we could help more, but unfortunately - because we aren't a crisis service - there is not a lot we can do except to tell you we are here and we are listening. But if you need immediate support, please call:

Lifeline: 13 11 14 or Crisis Chat
Suicide call back service: 1300 659 467 or online counselling
Mensline 1300 789 978
If in immediate danger: 000
Can you tell us what has helped in the past?

Re: Relapse

Hi @Chris

I really feel for you. I've experienced many a muxed episode and it's awful particularly when it's presenting as a dysphoric mania as appears to be the case for you. These episodes can be immensely mentally and physically painful. I found just walking around and around inside the house relieved the physical pain a little.

Do keep in contact with your psychiatrist particularly if it gets even worse. Are you managing to get some sleep?

Re: Relapse

Hi kurra

My psychiatrist increased my antipsycotic medication at night and two small doses during the day, so i am sleeping better at night and the day time dose is taking the edge off. I am trying to do few jobs during the day. I tire quickly though. I just wish i had a better understanding of what is hapening to me. Ive been feeling very aggressive along with the aggitation and irritability. Aggresion is not me. Im a very placid easy going type of person. That is what upsets me the most. I just dont get it. I see my psychologist on monday, which will be good. Thanks for you support.

Re: Relapse

I had the same confusion @Chris when I had the same symptoms you're having. I too am far from being an aggressive person in fact I'm mostly a very gentle soul. My psychiatrist called it dysphoric mania and it was pure hell.

My psychiatrist put me on to mega doses of an antipsychotic. It did eventually work well but I was a complete mess for several weeks.

I wish you well. The sleep you're managing to get will help you enormously. Here for you if you need to talk fella. 🎶

Re: Relapse

Well my 93yr old father in law passed away this evening. He went to have his shower but collapsed and died. My daughter has been his carer for over five years and lives with him, her husband, and two children aged 11 and 18. Needless to say they are all very upset. Going to be an emotional roller coaster the next few days.

Re: Relapse

Ahh Chris. .. even in such an elderly person it is difficult to accept the finality of that last breath. It will be an emotional roller coaster for some days. A time for giving kindness and compassion which could well prove to be a huge challenge for you at the moment.

You.may well feel that you can't do this at the moment but I suspect that you'll surprise yourself. It is however important for you to contact your doctor so that he/she is aware of the additional stressors you'll be needing to deal with.

It's a good idea to encourage his immediate family members to concentrate on the wonderful memories you all have of him.
Talk when you need to. I may not be able to answer immediately but I promise that I will respond as soon as I can.

Hugzzz Chris.

Re: Relapse

Thanks Kurra

I go straight into auto pilot. I do the necessary practical things. I try and give the emotional support. Let them talk. Give them a hug.. I guess its been quite sobering in a way. I found myself observing their reaction to this. What if it was me they found dead?

How would they be affected? Can i really inflict that much pain? What kind of reaction is there going to be when i go back into hospital? I feel guilty about going back in. Attention seeking . I should be able to cope. Putting too much pressure on family. No end to this.

Re: Relapse

Hi @Chris,
I've used auto pilot many a time and it's an excellent coping strategy in the situation you have at the moment.

Your thoughts about how it would affect the family if it had been you they found is something that is worthy of careful consideration. There was an incident where I worked a couple of years ago. I learnt a lot about the huge effect something like this can have on so many more people than you'd ever imagine.
Hang in there Chris. You're doing very well under extremely difficult circumstances.
