When did you stop talking about your thoughts?

When did you stop talking about your thoughts?

Considering you're on a mental health support forum, you have probably had some experience with talking about your thoughts.

However, when you were really struggling, was there ever a point where you decided to stop sharing it?

Why, and what happened?

To be honest I have never been so open with my thoughts until recently. I have struggled with depression on and off for about 26 years. I always felt the stigma with MI and felt ashamed at not being able to cope. I did my best to squash and hide my inner most feelings and l have ended up hurting those closest to me deeply. I can't thank this forum enough for their understanding and support.

Re: When did you stop talking about your thoughts?

I have thought about not sharing my thoughts because I don't like to sound like I am complaining. I have schizophrenia and my voices say they don't like me because I complain a lot. I know there are others worse off than me but my voices totally take away my confidence. I was a reasonable student before I was diagnosed and taking large amounts of antipsychotics and antidepressants. I had a better memory and better cognition but my voices had me convinced that I was intellectually impaired to below normal standard. They call me a looser and I have the temerity to complain about them. Over the yearsI have lost all my dreams one by one. I have been in a very low place. I readjusted my goals and just hoped to get some quality of life. So yes, at some point I stopped complaining about my voices until I came across this forum. I try to focus on hobbies such as watching tv, reading, going to the movies. I procrastinate about housework and try new recipes. I try to remain positive giving me something to find in common with other people. But I do begrudge what the voices have done to me. I do think about what life might have been like without the voices and when people get angry with me that I'm not working or jealous of my free time I can't help thinking that you have all the things I wanted such as a husband, childtren, a job, a house why are you angry and jealous of me? I'm not being a bum, I didn't choose to live like this. The voices chose me. So I'm sorry for complaining but I just don't get some people.

Similarly to Cin, it's been hard for me to get started. Even when I was trying to ask for help, I couldn't say what I needed to due to fear of being weak and it's been a long slow journey from there. Talking anonymously online has helped a lot (although typically I have comms misalignments trying to talk about my thoughts on the SANE forums, so not so much here).

To pick out the times I went from closed off to clamped shut, it would be whenever I got the impression that the person I was speaking to also thought that my problem was minor, fake, just weakness, they didn't understand or they didn't care. That happened with my counselor when I was a teenager and it took me 10 years to work up to trying to talk without anonymity again, and rewrite the story with the same counselor to see if maybe this time it could be different. The beginning of the new story has been brutal but I think we're finally reaching something more manageable.

I was told about purposeful sharing and that helped me turn the spigot of disclosure from full bore to something I can control. These days I try to share when it’s relevant.

currently I feel Ive overshaed my thoughts to the point I now dont want to share and just tidy up the mess Ive made of being so honest with those around me cause some family members still dont fully understand, others overbearing and others Ive literally destryed relationships with because of it,at this point it needs to be just between me and my doctor and if I do end up diagnosed and on meds I shouldnt have to tell every peron whats the diagnosis and what meds I take anyaway, even if they do ask about tomorws appointment I will only tell a few who I choose to tell about this as its caused such a mess in my extended family at the moment and hasnt helped my pahses of self loathing and bouts of crying or yelling ect
