Wrong Diagnosis

Wrong Diagnosis

Hey people, is there anyone here who has lived with the wrong Diagnosis & how did they manage with their Dr's?

I have PTSD from Family Violence & my Doctor has said I gave myself PTSD from engaging with Delusions. The delusion being the Family Violence.

Has anyone else had such problems with Doctors?

Re: Wrong Diagnosis

Hi and welcome to the forums, @Ms-Sunshine ! It's good to have you here.

I am a bit shocked by what your doctor said about delusions! I would be seeking another doctor (or at least a second opinion).

Is this a GP you're talking about, or a psychologist?

I hope you find the forums an encouraging place. A handy tip is to type @ then click on a member's name when you're replying to someone, to let them know you're talking to them, so they don't miss it. 🙂

Re: Wrong Diagnosis

Thanks for responding @NatureLover!

The Doctor is a Psychiatrist & I'm on a Forced Treatment Order so I have to participate in this little game for 3 months.

I didn't give informed consent to the medication either & he refused outright to discuss medication. I called the IMHA Advocacy Service & he wouldn't talk to them about the Medication either.

I made a complaint to the MH Commissioner & requested a new Treatment Team, which I've just started working with.

The problem is that it doesn't matter how many new eyes see the original information, they continue to agree the Family Violence is a Delusion.

I took them to VCAT & they told them they believe the Family Violence is real, but they told the MH Tribunal its not real.

I found a bunch of fines attached to such behaviour in the MH Act & intend to hold them accountable to the MH Act in my state. I just have to survive the "Treatment" first to get off the Order.

I can't afford a Private Psychiatrist & where the government is sending me have 6 month rotations on Training Doctors, so the Doctor I used to have, who wrote all the Delusions of Family Violence mess, is also Teaching the Doctors I see that are under him, so I guess he is just indulging in his ego with the work environment - I don't know, but I I just want to survive the Drugs they prescribe as I get very sick from them.

I also have Graves Disease which causes high levels of Anxiety & has frequent negative interactions with the Meds I'm being prescribed, mostly the side effects are more pronounced.

I'm just trying to find some tips on how to engage with these Doctors without pushing too many of their psychological buttons.

BTW the Chief Psychiatrist in my state has published guidelines on responding to Family Violence but my previous treatment team refused to follow them.

The Guidelines have a lot of detail on PTSD but they simply refused to consult it. I've advised my new Treatment Team to read it...

I'm also inclined to have concern over this predicament. Objectively, it's a huge call. Whether you are right, they are right and even scenarios where you're all correct have complex implications. Additionally, it's foundational to work on common ground with your practitioners. I'm wondering whether it feels like differentiating on the data or the analysis. Where's the common ground and what's the disagreement? That sort of thing.

Re: Wrong Diagnosis

@Ms-Sunshine Ooooooh Yes. Very familiar with misdiagnosis/mistreatment by therapists.

* Therapist perscribed me pills one session, saying (with a sense of urgency): "I really should of had you on these from the beginning." Months later, when I insisted for the umpteenth time that the pills were having no effect on me, he said: "Well, I didn't think they would, because your not depressed."

* Repeatedly told my therapist that the pills he had me on weren't having any effect, every time (aside from the last time) he would shut me down by saying: "Well, you look better."

* As I said above, one therapist insisted I wasn't depressed, while another diagnosed me as being incapable of feeling happiness. So figure that one out.

* Therapist would never listen when I noted factors about me/my life that directly contradicted her diagnosises, including her diagnosis about me being incapable of feeling happiness.

* Frequent insinuations that I was agoraphobic, which I wasn't. She'd try to bully me into doing something I didn't want to do, then would simply decide by herself that my displeasure must be agoraphobia, rather then some other factor about the situation.

* She was obsessed with my financial situation; as in, her measuring post for guaging the value of my life was single-mindedly: "if he's rich, then he's fine; if he's poor, then he's in trouble." She had no interest whatsoever in my happiness/life-satisfaction.

I could go on for hours, TBH, and I frequently have.

Re: Wrong Diagnosis

@Ms-Sunshine I just read your second post and your situation sounds really terrible!

Have you tried connecting with the patient advocacy group for your state? (VMIAC for VIC www.vmiac.org.au; Being for NSW www.being.org.au; Consumers of Mental Health WA for WA www.comhwa.org.au) Maybe they can help?

Re: Wrong Diagnosis

Thank you, that sounds exactly like what is happening to me! Threats, Bullying, Mockery the lot!

Thanks for sharing! And thank you for the links to services. I used my state advocacy service but they got nowhere with the Team, we were both completely ignored.

I needed to talk about it to support myself so I signed up here
