Surviving being sexually abused by counseller

Surviving being sexually abused by counseller

I saw a counseller for help becuse I was sexually assaulted (of the most serious type in law, I see that the simple word for the crime I was a victim of isn't permitted on this forum) and he sexually assualted me (of the most serious type in law), saying it was theraputic and that when I kept trying to say no I was resisting his therapy.

I googled it and it seems that counsellers having 'unethical sexual contact' with clients is not uncommon but I couldn't find much information on how to cope if they (sexually abuse you of the most serious type) you. I am terrified now becuse nowhere and no-one seems safe. Even those who are meant to be there to help can treat me as worthless like this.

I tried to complain to the mental health organisation but they didn't believe me, they said I imagined it becuse I was (sexually abused of the most serious type) before so I am paranoid and I imagined it. But I didn't. I think the same thing would probably happen if I went to the police- I wouldn't be believed. This feels like oppression of the the most extreme kind.

How do I even begin to recover from this? I can't leave the house, I can't see a counseller as I no longer feel safe in any way, knowing they can do that and that no-one will beleive me.

Has this happened to anyone else? How did you survive it?

Re: Surviving being sexually abused by counseller

It was dreadful to have the first experience and then to have to deal with a secondary abuse is heinous. I am very sorry about that.

Take care of YOU .. when you are ready ... deal with the trauma ... with a therapist that earns your trust.

Hi @EndOppression, i am so sorry this crime has happened to you. It breaks my heart to hear you have been hurt so badly when you were seeking help. Donot go back to this counsellor who is a criminal and I understand you may be frightened speaking up, but there is strong community support against this crime. Firstly, because i donot know your age etc, if you are young, can you speak to an adult, parent you trust, who will support you? If you want to just talk first, you can ring a sexual assault helpline in your state or territory. My child told me about a shocking event toward him and I rang the Rape Crisis Centre and they were so supportive to us and i know they will 100% support and listen to you and advise you, so you can make an informed decision. They will not judge or push you in to anything, but will give you unconditional support. This i know, because they helped me and my child. The decision was for my teenage child to make re: reporting the crime or not and mine was to love him and be there for him and accept his decisions which i did. Another support i have used is Life Line many times when i have felt in crisis and they also know who to call for help as well. Finally, did your doctor refer you to this counsellor? Tell your doctor what happened as well if you feel you can. I am not sure which google sight you looked up, but it is totally wrong and unethical for any counsellor or human to sexually assault any person, it is illegal. I truely hope you find the support you need at this time and i will pray that good kind and caring help will come your way. Bye for now, @1stepup61

Hello @EndOppression

Welcome to the forums, and thank you for sharing your story with us. It sounds like you have been through a lot and are still in a really difficult place. Reaching out for help is not easy, and it it understandable that you no longer feel safe to do so. I am glad you found our online community for support and a place for you to share.

@1stepup61 made a good point about continuing to reach out for support and contacting specialised helplines. A good place to start might be the National Sexual Assult Hotline on 1800 737 732 and the Australian Centre for Post Traumatic Mental Health

Although abuse is perpetrated and experienced differently by everyone there are a number of people on here who have been brave enough to share their stories, ie a few people shared here, @BlueBay and @Appleblossom shared here and in here @kristin links to an article with tips about how to manage flashbacks.

I hope you find support and comfort on the SANE forums.

jac-in-the-box.

Hi @EndOppression

I'm sorry to hear about your horrific experience.

To add to the suggestions above, you can also raise this with the National Mental Health Commission.

I know it must feel like no one will listen, but there are people who will - you just have to find the right ones.

Take care,

Nik
